DAVID VILLA STARS IN VALENCIA ROMP
Valencia made it two wins out of two to start the season as David Villa ripped apart Valladolid's defence in a 4-2 victory on Sunday.
Valencia grabbed the lead in the 10th minute with a well-worked goal as Silva got on the end of Mata's cross from the right wing. The visitors were on the attack again seven minutes later, but Villa's shot was punched clear by Sanz, who would deny the striker moments later. However, Valladolid were level just before the half-hour as Aleman capitalised on an error from goalkeeper Moya.
Costa had a chance a moment later but lashed wide of the net. And they were punished minutes later as Valencia raced to the other end where Villa scored with a sweeping finish to Pablo's cross. Ever Banega blazed over as Valencia continued to attack, and they got their third goal moments before the first half ended with an incisive breakaway. There were some calamitous scenes in the Valencia defence as they struggled to clear the ball, but once they did, Mata wasted little time in racing from the halfway line to poke the ball through the goalkeeper's legs and give his side a two-goal cushion at the interval.
Valladolid started the second half brightly, and Moya had to be alert to punch away Arzo's strong header in the 50th minute. And having kept their advantage, Valencia soon extended it as Villa broke the offside trap to latch on to Miguel's diagonal ball and poke it beyond the goalkeeper.
Aleman had a good sight of goal for the hosts just after the hour, but he failed to make solid contact from eight yards out and Moya made an easy save. But the hosts got a goal back in the 66th minute when Aleman broke the offside trap on the right side and his cross left Manucho with a simple finish to score his first goal for the club.
Valencia should have restored their three-goal advantage in the 71st minute as Silva broke free, but he got the ball caught beneath his feet before an unconvincing shot was blocked by the goalkeeper. Villa then had two further chances to add to the lead, but saw Sanz push his first shot to safety before he missed the target with the second. Villa then set up a glorious chance for Alba, who was all alone in front of goal but somehow sent his shot wide with only Sanz to beat. However, it would not cost Valencia, who had already done enough to earn all three points.
