BERLIN, May 29 (Reuters) - Werder Bremen's Brazilian midfielder Diego has been voted Germany's outfield player of the year by his fellow professionals.

Diego, who moved to Werder for six million euros ($8.07 million) from Porto last year, polled 50.7 percent of the votes of 268 players in German soccer magazine Kicker.

Greek forward Theofanis Gekas, the league's top scorer with 20 goals, finished a distant second with 10.7 percent, while young German striker Mario Gomez was third with 6.3 percent.

The 21-year-old Manuel Neuer was named best goalkeeper after breaking through to become number one at runners-up Schalke 04.

this is great for him,he needs this to get his form back for Brasil
zico10
I wish tat too,I think he will start doing well from this point on
brasil5x
that is if he get the opportunity, its all up to Dunga
zico10
dunga has his head in Elanos ass
brasil5x
good one
zico10
Diego must play
brasil5x
with Kaka it might not be possible
zico10
media wants him to start
brasil5x
he will I suppose,in copa america
DDK
Yeah Kaka isnt there so he'll have to start but howabout Anderson, he's talented player too and can play in that position too.
brasil5x
Anderson is good but too young for the big team, not enough experience either
zico10
Diego should start in Copa and in the Turkey game,I heard his interview, his attatude is so professional, that it amazes me.
brasil5x
he is in great form ,as soon as he came in ,he changed the game and the attack had more power, but we missed too many any way.

Diego is very much needed in our team, and he can hook up with Robinho.
zico10
I am very sure that he will do well in Copa
brasil5x
yes he will, and will be back in the NT for good
DDK
I like watching him play for Werder this season, very entertaining player but what happened when he was at Porto, when he left they got Anderson and he did well for them. By the way Anderson made the NT squad for Copa america but I think Diego would be first choice.

Schuster: Real Madrid considering Diego signing

Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster has expressed interest in Werder Bremen midfielder Diego.

"He's a very interesting player," admitted Schuster. "I have already spoken with the Real Madrid leadership about him. But not for this season, we will consider him in the future."

Union FC
Diego was one of the big upcomers with Robinho and kaka... just kinda fell thru the cracks... weird case, I hope he shows his talent for brazil soon, great player.
brasil5x
I think he should stay in Germany,in a club like Real Madrid,it doesn't take long to for a player to become out of favor with the coach, specially to have a different coach every season.
True_Faith
Diego is a very good playmaker, always liked him at Porto and he has been great for Werder, he'd probably link up well with Robinho too providing both were given the starts.

Going to Real would be much better for him in terms of recognition to getting called up but he would maybe spend a lot of time on the bench, Diego could be in a bit of a dilemma when the transfer market re-opens as to choosing whether he wants to stay or go.
brasil5x
Werder Bremen midfield ace Diego admits he is flattered by comments from Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster that he is a target for the Spanish giants.

"There's been contact in the past," admitted the Brazil international.

"That a coach wants you is very pleasing. Schuster is very famous in Germany ... though I haven't read what he said. I am very happy in Bremen and recently signed a new contract."

Diego added: "I don't want to say too much else. Madrid are a great club, wonderful, but there's been no contact and my team is Bremen."

Yep agreed. Think moving to Portugal itself would have been a good stepping stone, but yes, the manager was the problem...seems to be doing great now. GReat player to watch

I am glad you agree, not all players make good in Portugal, but the coach was an ass with Diego,he was great before and after

Real Madrid are ready to make Werder Bremen midfield star Diego their prime transfer target for next season.

Already endorsed by Real coach Bernd Schuster, Diego's performance on Tuesday night at the Santiago Bernabeu convinced directors that the German's enthusiasm is not misplaced. Real sports chiefs Pedja Mijatovic and Miguel Angel Portugal, along with president Ramon Calderon, have already discussed a future bid for Diego in the last 24 hours.

"If the price is reasonable, we will sign him for next season," a Real insider told AS. Werder are expected to seek between £15-17 million for the Brazil international.
True_Faith
£15-17million for Diego wouldn't be bad at all, especially considering the money they've spent on players like Pepe!
JuveJay
Juve should have wrapped the deal up for him in the summer, now we are stuck with Almiron dry.gif
True_Faith
Do Juve have that sort of money to put on one player at the moment though?
JuveJay
Yes, but he is even more expensive now. We only spend something like £10m (balance) overall in the transfer market.
JuveJay
To be honest though I don't think he suited so much to Italy as he would be to Spain. He is best given a free reign. If he could make an impact such as Kaka however then that would be another story.
brasil5x
same was saidd about Kaka, but we know how that changed, but never know,Spain would be best for him,but I think he should stay in Germany
lincoln
brilliant player.a super star at werder, but would be a "just a good player,no kaka or ronaldinho" in a european top club.so stay at werder,or go to similar teams like atletico, valencia villareal etc.

Real Madrid's push for Werder Bremen midfield ace Diego won't be thwarted by the signing of a new contract.

The Brazil international inked a new deal through to 2011 last week, but close friends have told AS that Werder are prepared to listen to offers from Real for the midfielder.

Real coach Bernd Schuster wants to bring Diego to Madrid and the player has already informed Werder chiefs he will seek a move should the Spanish giants formalise their interest. Werder have assured Diego they won't stand in his way should the right offer arrive.

lincoln
big mistake for both real and diego if he goes to madrid.
brasil5x
it could be but who knows
zico10
I hear Barcelona are interested in him ?
brasil5x
I never heard anything
Rai
He's coming of age now, glad to see it always knew he would
brasil5x
I saw now,he is linked with Juventus
brasil5x
Werder Bremen star Diego cannot rule out playing for Real Madrid in the future.

The Brazil international is a prime target for Real and told AS: "Yes, I know about their interest, but it is not the time to speak about that subject. Everybody talks to me about Madrid and in soccer everything is possible.

"So I must continue working and playing good games so that I can continue improving.

"We're talking about a big club, but I have my mind centred on Werder, with which I renewed my contract until 2011. I am happy here, although I am 22 years old and we all like to improve."
