Francesco Totti was just 16 when he made his first appearance for AS Roma in a 2-0 away victory at Brescia Calcio on March 28, 1993. He scored four goals in twenty one outings in 1994-95 and over the ensuing seasons became a team regular. He was named Serie A Player of the Year in 2000 and in 2003. The following season (2000-01) he helped AS Roma secure their first league title since 1982-83, having scored thirteen Serie A goals. In the 2001-02 campaign Roma finished runners-up to Juventus, but Totti returned with a then personal-best of fourteen goals during the 2002-03 season.

2003-04: Playing in a more advanced role, Totti hit a career-high twenty goals as Roma finished second in Serie A behind A.C. Milan.
2004-05: A very disappointing season, the only bright side of which was Roma finishing second in the Italian Cup and thus qualifying for the UEFA Cup. In the 2004-05 season Roma had to replace four coaches. Despite all the problems, Totti scored twelve goals, and helped Vincenzo Montella score 21 with numerous assists. On December 19, 2004, Totti broke A.S. Roma's goal scoring record when he scored against Parma. It was Totti's 107th goal for the club, a record previously held by Roberto Pruzzo.
2005-06: A strange season for Roma and Totti. On 19 February 2006, while playing in the Italian Championship against Empoli F.C., he suffered a fracture of his left fibula, and severed the interconnecting ligaments with the malleolus. He returned from his injury on 11 May 2006 as a substitute in Roma's 3-1 defeat to Inter Milan in the Coppa Italia. As in the 2004-05 season, A.S Roma came in second in the Italian Cup (again trailing to Inter Milan). In the Serie A they finished 5th, and only qualified for the Champions League after the Calciopoli verdicts stripped Juventus and Fiorentina of their Champions League spots. Roma were then awarded 2nd place.
The team won eleven consecutive matches, matching AC Milan's 1989-90 record. The last match was won was a 2-0 victory against rivals S.S. Lazio, before a home draw thanks to a late goal from Inter ended the run. Coach Luciano Spalletti turned the team's line up from a defensive one to an attacking one (despite playing without strikers for most of the season, and for the last 8 or so games playing without Totti), and the team moved from fifteenth to fifth by the end of the season, with Totti scoring fifteen goals from midfielder or as a lone striker.

On March 27, 2010 il nostro capitano, Francesco Totti, retured to play against Inter Milan after again recovering from knee problems that have plagued his career in recent years. March 27th 2010 marked a significant date in Totti's career, as 17 years before, on the same date, he also made his debut as a substitute at the age of 16 years old. This time around, he came in around the 81st minute, after more than 40 days without playing, and he made an immediate impact as he keept control of the ball, made crucial passes (one of them to the chest of Luca Toni which almost resulted on an amazing goal) and he got the opponents in foul trouble. Untimately, it was absolutely great to see Totti be part of that amazing win against the hated Inter Milan and their players. Let's hope il capitano steers us into the Scudetto tittle as the season comes to a close.

RINGRAZIA A NOSTRO CAPITANO E BENTORNATO A NOI!
Carlo Romano
Even our greatest ever player can't go on forever though, more's the pity!

I hope that unlike Zola at Napoli who had to somehow try to fill Maradona's boots that the successor to our pupone has a much happier story to write, that's to say, in terms of staying with us and keeping us among the serious contenders in our new Italian Premier League, presuming that also works out!

But until such time, our gallant Capitan' is still with us...and I'm glad we have a born and bred Romano in Ranieri to look for and help groom Totti's...well I can't say replacement though to all intents and purposes that's what he, whoever that he is, will actually be.
Fisek
Well said Carlo, I'm sure you are right, given the massive talent our team has in the waiting, although its hard to imagine anyone in our Primavera being capable of filling-in such massive shoes, if you will.

I might as well try to pay homage to il nostro capitano and revive this furum dedicated to him with news about him. The latest news:

Francesco Totti: "Sono pronto, Roma a tutta" (I'm [physically] ready, Roma [ready to aim for] everything).

"I am happy to re-enter after after being absent for a longer period than I expected, but now I feel ready to give it my personal best that is important to my teammates towards the end of this championship......I believe that only in the last games will the various positions [in the standings] be decided."

I truly think this man is physically ready, unlike previous times, which we saw him come back to play half-assed only to re-agrivate any prior injury that he had....I must admit that my mouth is watering at the The To-To combination, which will be amazing to see. Let Bari see the worst of it this up-coming Saturday onethumbup.gif

The only negative thing is that Menez will drop to the bench again even if he's playing very well.

Oh, I don't know about that Capi. Wouldn't you say that a 90% healthy and creative Francesco Totti is better than anything Menez could offer us. At least, to me, there is no competition! I chose a mildly healthy Totti over anyone of our offensive players, anyday.
il capitano
sure but I just feel for Menez who finally got his shit together. I just hope that he'll be patient and not start looking for another club.

Totti recently said:

"Vincere uno scudetto con la Roma è come vincerne dieci nel resto d’Italia, a Roma tutto si sublima. La vittoria nel 2001 è il ricordo più bello della mia carriera, era il mio sogno da bambino, la gente scese per strada e tutti erano fuori di testa."

"To win one Scudetto with Roma its like winning ten of them in the rest of Italy, in Rome, everything is [more] subliminal. The victory of 2001 is the most beautiful memory of my career, it was my dream as a kid, as the people descended on the streets and everyone was out of their minds"

Just imagine!.........there is just that small chance, it could happen all over again!

You have to wait quite a time for it to load, buddy. What Greg has done is to super impose the image of Totti with his son over the previous one, in effect making him the hero of the piece. Shame about the Swedish commentary though...

No Rome derby for Totti

Francesco Totti has ruled himself out of the capital derby, but believes the future at Roma is bright under the new owners.

The Giallorossi captain spoke about numerous issues during a Press conference on Thursday, starting with Sunday’s clash against Lazio.

“It’s true, I won’t be playing in the derby,” Totti said after he picked up a thigh muscle injury in Week 6.

“I tried to recover, but I wasn’t able to. I hope to be back for the game against Palermo next week, but we’ll have to take it one day at a time.”

Unable to hurt Lazio on the field of play, Totti decided to poke fun at Edy Reja seeing as he’s lost all four of the Rome derbies played while Lazio boss.

“Reja will be the key man in the derby, he’s our lucky charm! Joking aside, I hope that Miroslav Klose doesn’t play as he’s so strong.

“They’ll be favourites, though, as they always are…”

Roma are at the start of a new era after the club was bought by an American consortium, but the transition has not been easy for Totti.

He was labelled as ‘lazy’ by new general director Franco Baldini in a summer interview and new boss Luis Enrique initially didn’t see him as an untouchable figure.

“It’s a new project, important and young,” Totti added. “I think they want to do some great things and have a great team. You have to when you’re in a city like this.

“The Baldini interview? Hearing snippets of it left me unhappy. But everyone is entitled to have an opinion, also because I’ve always had a really good relationship with Franco.

“I’ve never had any problems with him. I think he’ll arrive here soon and then he can explain what his words signified.

“I’ve let it go though. I’m pleased that he’s part of the staff and I hope to win things together again.

“Luis Enrique? Perhaps we didn’t understand each other at the start. I wanted to play, I was fit and I didn’t understand what I was doing wrong.

“I was told that I was at the centre of the project by the club, but I then didn’t play or I was substituted.

“Everything has been resolved though. I often speak with the Coach and we have a good relationship. I’d liken him to Luciano Spalletti as our game is very offensive.

“He works us hard though, two-and-a-half hours a day. I’ve not worked so much since Zdenek Zeman was here,” he joked.

“He’s a Coach who can do well in this city. He has clear and innovative ideas. He teaches us things that we have never learnt in Italy.

“My role? It’s up to me to find the right position on the field of play. I’m just putting myself at the disposal of the team. Saying that, it is odd that I still haven’t scored this season.”

Asked for his opinion on Antonio Cassano’s declaration this week that he plans to retire soon, the veteran said he still loves the game.

“I want to play on until I am 40. I want to continue to enjoy myself. When I see that I can no longer do that then I’ll throw in the towel.”

One club man Totti also reassured fans that Daniele De Rossi, whose contract expires in June, wants to remain.

“I’ve spoken to De Rossi. It is his intention to stay here for life. However, I can’t go into the specifics because they are private matters. I just hope an agreement can be found as soon as possible.”

a great interview, the squad seems reunited now and life is good at Trigoria, it would be a lot better if we manage to win against those wimps

Roma legend Giuseppe Giannini feels the core of their crisis is that “Francesco Totti was overthrown. He needs to be at the centre of a project.”

The captain has not featured as much as usual this season due to both injuries and the decisions of under-fire Coach Luis Enrique.

“He should certainly be fielded against Juventus on Monday, because he is a player who can bring a new mentality for all his teammates,” said Giallorossi legend Giannini.

“He was on the bench in Florence and it showed, as the result was negative. Totti sends positive vibes to everyone around him.”

Enrique made it clear from the moment he arrived that Totti was no longer untouchable.

“Totti was overthrown. Someone like him always needs to be at the centre of a project, while this season he was put in doubt right from the start. The whole environment around Roma felt the negative effects.”
Hmmmmm. mellow.gif Thoughts?
il capitano
nah it's rubbish! Totti is 35 years old ffs, the positive feeling should come out in the dressing room instead of on the pitch...

Sure he hasn't lost it all but he's not the savior people are still expecting him to be.
M. Piedlourde
Totti needs to step aside. For the most part he has done so. De Rossi needs to step up and demand control of every game now. He needs to start feeding goals. Make Pjanic or Pizarro play behind him for once. Punch Lamela in the face if he holds the ball too long. He needs to the one to dictate the course of battle. Totti planned to be retired by now. He definitely has to remember that he said he would be done by now.

Totti to play until he’s 40
By Football Italia staff

Francesco Totti has reflected on spending his career with only Roma and revealed that he would like to play for another five years if possible.

The 35-year-old, Roma’s all-time leading appearance holder and goal-scorer, is close to finishing his 19th season with the Giallorossi.

Even as he claims he had countless offers during his career to leave his hometown club, Totti has reflected that he could never have left the Eternal City.

“Although I had several opportunities to leave, I always said that I wanted to wear just one shirt during my career,” he declared on FIFA’s official website.

“I cannot imagine a different team, also I do not know how I’d be able to tell my children.

“My love for Roma has always taken precedence over all the offers received over the years and I’m glad I made this decision. For me, it is more significant than winning a Ballon d’Or.”

Totti then looked ahead and indicated that his current ambition is to extend his playing career for as long as possible.

“My future? I still have two years left on my contract and if I can remain in the same physical state then I’d like to play until I’m 40. For now, however, it is only speculation. As long as I am fit and useful for the team then I will wear these colours with great pride.

“If I lacked the physical fitness then I would be the first to call me out. I believe in my potential, the important thing is to do what is necessary to stay healthy, live a regular life and behave professionally.”

Totti also reflected on Luis Enrique’s work at the club that did include a difficult start between the pair.

“It’s normal not to be happy when on the bench, but I’ve always made myself available to help the team. Then, when I played I didn’t do too badly, and the Coach began to give me greater consideration.

“I have always said that when there are changes that they take time to be completed. The Coach’s goal is to bring a new mindset to Italy. I like the way he plays and I’m convinced that soon it will become a successful method.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------

If he learns to know his role, even on the bench, then im all for it. Whether haters admit it or not, when he's not playing, we tend very often to lose our purpose of play and collapse mentally (recent example: a team like Lecce)

he's the captain, I thought De Rossi has taken that role from him this season but Francesco truly is the flagship of Roma
M. Piedlourde
Totti can stay as long as he likes. He has never given a reason to fear that he would put the team in jeopardy. Maldini played at Milan forever. Totti can do the same for Roma. His presence would have a great effect on younger Roma players, who can get experience from a real champion who has experienced victory at many different levels. Any team would be blessed to have such a figure.
