Is he finally over his injury spells?
JuveJay
I hope so, but back problems have a habit of returning. I think his lengthy absence this year meant he could recover fully.

Definitely one of the best I have seen in a while, it's like he knows where the ball is going to go sometimes.

The guy is just peerless right now, I haven't seen him play so well in a Juventus shirt before, that is how well he is playing.
Kyle
Has he drastically gone downhill because he is rated 66 on the Fifa 10 demo? dunno.gif
M. Piedlourde
your rating just went down for playing Fifa...
JuveJay
I picked up on this in the FIFA thread, look at his positional rating - it is 1. It's a mistake. I think they went to high 90's then went past it.

To answer your initial question, no, he is playing as well as he ever has, maybe better.

PS buy PES.

Must be a thing with the best keepers on the game, Cech is rated very low too.

Buffon: 'I need knee surgery'

Gianluigi Buffon admits “I need an operation on the meniscus ligament,” but will try to hold out for the Christmas break.

The Italy and Juventus goalkeeper announced the unfortunate news after last night’s 2-2 draw with the Republic of Ireland.

“The meniscus ligament in my left knee is damaged, I need an operation,” he confessed.

“I will try to carry on as long as I can. I hope to reach the game with Inter.”

That Scudetto showdown on Saturday December 5 is the cut-off point and, if he can continue that long, Buffon will go under the knife straight after the match.

It will mean missing at least three Serie A games, but far less than usual because he will have the entire Christmas break to recover.

Juventus naturally hope their shot-stopper will be back in action in time for another crunch match against Milan on January 10.

Buffon was beset by injuries last season, most notably muscular and back problems.

This is the second heavy blow for the Bianconeri, as midfielder Claudio Marchisio underwent a meniscus operation on Saturday morning and will be out for six weeks.

It just gets better, injuries will make or break our season.

Blog: The Greatest?

Gigi Buffon won his 100th cap on Saturday. Giancarlo Rinaldi compares him with another Italian legend in the shape of Dino Zoff

When I was growing up, there was a name which seemed to be stamped on the Italy teamsheet before it even reached the national Coach. Other positions might change their occupant, but there was only one man for the goalkeeping job. We could surely never see the likes of Dino Zoff again.

Yet football can make fools of us all – none more than myself. On Saturday night another Italian shot-stopper reached the landmark of 100 appearances for his country. So, it is only natural to ask, has Gigi Buffon earned the right to be recognised as the Azzurri’s greatest ever ‘keeper?

Times have changed, of course, and the role of net-minder has evolved over the years. Zoff came from a time when elegance and poise were still admirable traits for his position. Nowadays, it seems athleticism and a goal-filling physique have become the order of the day. It makes the duo almost impossible to compare.

My memories of Dino are of an unflappable presence who made the tough saves look easy and transmitted an air of calm to his defensive colleagues. The cruel will recall the Dutch thunderbolts which beat him in 1978. I prefer to remember his amazing goal-line grasp which helped to foil Brazil in that classic 3-2 encounter four years later.

His heir to the Juve and Italy throne is a different creature. There is no doubt he gives confidence to the rest of the team when he is in the side, but not in the same manner as Zoff. Buffon is quicker off his line, a more intimidating presence and has broken more than one opponent’s heart with the quality of his saves. I am thinking, in particular, of his amazing parry from Zinedine Zidane in the World Cup Final.

Back in the 1970s, the UK used to wonder how the Azzurri ever ended up with a goalkeeper called Zoff. After all, he sounds more like he belongs in Germany. Buffon, too, sports a name which ends in a harsh consonant rather than a musical vowel.

Luckily for La Nazionale, they are both Italian through and through. If pushed to pick who was better, I might just go for young Gigi. But, deep down, I am simply grateful to have seen two such outstanding No 1s in action.

Buffon: 'Tempers were frayed'

Gianluigi Buffon explained how Ciro Ferrara prepared Juventus for this match and discussed his violent reaction to Thiago Motta.

“The week was very relaxed and the Coach did very well to keep us calm and give us more confidence, which is what we absolutely needed,” said the goalkeeper.

The 2-1 win over Inter put them right back in the Scudetto race and is a notorious grudge match, but seemed relatively calm until the closing stages.

When Felipe Melo received a second yellow card for lashing out at Mario Balotelli – who made the most of it – a brawl erupted that saw three men drag Buffon away from Thiago Motta.

“It was a tough game, but apart from the last five minutes there was no problem,” said the World Cup winner.

“These things happen, the tempers can get frayed in a match situation and it ends there.”

Earlier in the game Buffon had shown great sportsmanship when telling a referee he had touched a wayward cross to put it out of play, reversing the original decision.

“It was a throw-in, hardly a massive deal. If it had been a goal I would’ve thought a bit more carefully!”

Buffon undergoes knee surgery

Gianluigi Buffon has gone under the knife to correct a meniscus problem and will be out of action for six weeks.

The Juventus goalkeeper has been putting off the surgery for most of the season so that he could help his team during a difficult time.

He was originally set to have the operation straight after the Champions League decider with Bayern Munich, but postponed it for a few days.

After last night's 3-1 defeat in Bari, he opted to begin the process of rehabilitation from this long-standing injury.

Buffon underwent surgery to correct a tear in the meniscus ligament of his left knee in Turin's Fornaca clinic.

He was accompanied by his mother and his girlfriend, Alena Seredova. The timing of the operation was set so that he could use the Christmas holidays as recovery time, missing as few games as possible.

I am gradually getting worried about him. It seems to me it's been almost years since he was last consistently fit. Even when he is fit to play now he doesn't look all that sharp.
JuveJay
Once a goalkeeper gets injury problems they are hard to shake, but I don't think there is too much to worry about.

The last time he was out of action for those many months, he had his niggly back problem sorted out finally, so that hasn't been a problem.

Now he has had this meniscus problem in his knee troubling him for as long as maybe a year or so, so once he comes back this shouldn't be a problem either. He has undergone these surgeries to prolong his career, rather than have him out for 2-4 weeks spells every now and again.

I'm not sure Buffon will be playing when he is 38-39 really anyway, I'm not sure he has that mentality or desire to do that, but we'll see.

Buffon world's top goalkeeper

Gianluigi Buffon has been named Best Goalkeeper of the last 23 years by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics.

The IFFHS began its huge project of gathering data from around the globe in 1987 and so their records only go that far, naming Buffon the greatest shot-stopper in the history of the institute.

The Juventus goalkeeper totalled 87 points, a landslide considering second-placed Iker Casillas had just 69 and Peter Schmeichel 63 points.

The top 10 is completed by Oliver Kahn in fourth, Edwin van der Sar, Jose Chilavert, ex-Inter star Walter Zenga, Petr Cech of Chelsea, Belgium’s Michel Preud’homme and in 10th place former Parma captain Claudio Taffarel.

Italians figure heavily in the list of top goalkeepers since 1987, as Zenga is in seventh place, while Francesco Toldo and Gianluca Pagliuca follow at number 20 and 22 respectively.

Angelo Peruzzi is at number 35, ex-Milan goalkeeper Sebastiano Rossi in 45th and Luca Marchegiani in 70th.

Nice recognition for Gigi, imo he is unrivalled since the days of Schmeichel at his peak - but Gigi has and will have a greater period at that top level. Before him there aren't many to be mentioned in the same breath - Yashin, Zoff, Banks, Zamora, guys of that reputation.

Blog: A goal for Buffon

Juventus shouldn’t consider retiring Gigi Buffon’s No 1 shirt when he hangs up his gloves. Antonio Labbate has another suggestion

I didn’t exactly have a dream. It was a thought in passing, more accurately an idea rather than a brainwave given that it is a consideration that I’m not even that sure about myself. It won’t revolutionise football either so don’t get your hopes up.

It involves Juventus. No, it has nothing to do with their current managerial situation, but their new stadium – one of the few things that President Jean-Claude Blanc has to be congratulated on – and their goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon.

The latter, who turns 32 today by the way, undoubtedly ranks as one of the outfit’s greatest goalkeepers, and players, alongside the equally legendary Dino Zoff. Their heroics in Bianconero over the years won’t be forgotten, but they should also be recognised and honoured by future generations.

So what’s the proposal? In short, the Old Lady of Italian football should consider naming each set of goalposts in their new arena in honour of Zoff and Buffon. Bare with me for a minute before you start with the abuse, let me make a few points.

Stands in stadiums have names. Juventus for example have the Curva Scirea, so why couldn’t they have a ‘Porta Buffon’ and a ‘Porta Zoff’ at either end which could become reference points for the new build?

It would also enhance the Juventinita of the ground given that the old Delle Alpi will be subject to the naming rights trend which is engulfing the world game. In a climate where money is so important, wouldn’t it be nice to bring back a bit of sentiment to the sport?

Of course people will argue that you can honour Buffon and Zoff by retiring the No 1 shirt, but it is a gesture which sits uncomfortably. Children grew up wanting to be the new Zoff and kids today are hoping to become Buffon’s heir. Let’s not rob them of their dream to wear that special jersey, but enhance their desire by offering them the chance to guard the goalmouth of their idols too.

Admittedly it might be a good idea to wait and see if Gigi actually ends his career in black and white before such an ‘honour’ is bestowed upon him, but it’s a notion that is worth considering. Isn’t it?

LOL, that sounds pretty cool, there isn't a club with two goalkeepers of such a standard in their recent history. It's a novel idea, but I'm not sure what it would mean or how it would be recognisable. Having their names on the crossbar? laugh.gif

Buffon skipped training with a muscular injury and will probably miss Ajax, he could also be out for a month if it is bad.

Sorensen's superb accumulation of Fantasy League points despite playing for a poor team just further strengthens my point icon_mrgreen.gif

Gigi is a legend though, greatest goalkeeper of his generation
JuveJay
Is he doing well in terms of points? I really wouldn't know. icon_mrgreen.gif

I guess other good comparisons could be Ricardo Zamora - Iker Casillas, Sepp Maier - Oliver Kahn. Juve also had a goalkeeper called Gianpiero Combi who played in the great 30's teams for Italy and Juventus, and he is considered an Italian and world goalballing legend from alongside Zamora at the same time.

Gordon Banks and Peter Shilton - Leicester City deserve a mention

Meh we're in trouble if he is out of those games, even if he has been a little out of form recently. Manninger is a good backup but our defence has been leaving gaps and he will be busy.

Buffon's retirement linked to Italy

Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon says he will retire when he is no longer called up to represent Italy.

The 32-year-old is still Italy's undisputed No 1 and has yet to be challenged between the sticks in Azzurro.

Speaking at the World Cup trophy tour, Buffon said: “When they no longer call me up to the national team, I will retire.

“It's not as if I would like to continue playing forever.”

Bufon has made 100 appearances for Italy since his debut in 1997, aged 19.

He is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world along with Iker Casillas and Julio Cesar.

-------------------------

Strange choice, especially if he keeps getting niggling injuries. He may or may not, but if he does then it would be better if he concentrated just on Juve. He is only a goalkeeper I suppose. I think he'll still be getting called up in 4 or 5 years tbh.

Buffon is staying, says agent

The agent of Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon has called for an end to reports that his client will be leaving Turin this summer.

Buffon has been linked with Manchester City and Bayern Munich after claims that Juventus might consider selling him to finance plans to rebuild the team.

Juventus vice-general manager Roberto Bettega poured cold water on the reports yesterday, calling Buffon 'untouchable'.

Speaking to Tutto Mercato Web, a clearly frustrated Silvano Martina said: “My client - I hope once and for all, in line with the denials from Juventus - will remain in Turin.

“When reports speak about the player's wish to leave and similar things, they are all without foundation.

“Gigi feels good at Juventus and has no intention of moving and it seems to me that Juve have just made his being unsellable official,” Martina concluded.

----------------------

It's fucking boring but I suppose if papers like The Daily Mail want to make up stories based on a fucking goal.com story then we just have to smile and wave laugh.gif I know where this comes from though, Martina said this about the paper a year ago:

QUOTE
"A deal doesn't exist between Manchester City and Buffon, there is nothing at all,"

"The paper who wrote the story are dishonest, liars and they only hurt themselves.

Whatever has been written this morning is worse than rubbish.

"It's a disgrace and they should be ashamed of themselves. I have never spoken to anyone and Juventus have never received an offer."

Make him interim player-coach until the end of the season, his support from the touchline second half was inspiring clap.gif
JuveJay
"It is hard to know where to begin when it comes to pinpointing his outstanding qualities, he has so many. And it's impossible to pick out a weakness. One of the most important qualities in a goalkeeper is calmness – an ability to stay cool under pressure is very important – and if he can transmit that quality to the defence and to his team-mates, it has a very positive effect on the way the team play. Buffon's presence reassures his colleagues. He is the contemporary keeper everyone playing in goal looks up to and aspires to emulate."

Buffon: Man City have no X Factor

Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon has launched a withering attack on Manchester City by saying that they aren't attractive to the world's best players.

City have been repeatedly linked with Buffon over the last year and apparently made an approach for him in January last year.

La Gazzetta dello Sport understands that they made another inquiry earlier this month, which Juventus didn't exactly discourage.

However, the prospects of Buffon moving to Eastlands appear distinctly unlikely after today's comments in an interview with the Daily Express.

“It doesn't surprise me that a lot of big players have turned down Manchester City. The best players in the world want to playing for the top teams in the top three Leagues, no more than five or six teams in Europe.

“It's a very elite list and Manchester City have to accept the fact they are not one of them.

“I read that City were interested in me last summer. I don't know if anything was tabled, but there is no way I could have considered it.

“I couldn't justify leaving one of Europe's most famous clubs for a team that are not playing football at the highest level.

“City have some fantastic players but if they want to go up to the next level and sign even better players then they must claim a Champions League spot this year.”

Gigi cannot leave Italia!

Even as a Romano I have to say it will be a black, black day if our sole surviving fuoriclasse leaves Juventus, yet if he does, (and somehow I think he will be persuaded to stay) where could he go in Italia? Inter have a very able goalie in Cesar. At a time when Milan are in need of a major rebuild, their padrone announced he is tightening the belt in terms of team investment. My Roma need Angelini or someone like him to buy that Medusa out and spend not only the €200mil+ asking price on doing so, but to spend as much again on top quality players before one of Gigi's calibre could justify coming to us. There are no other choices.

He'd have to go abroad and again I say that is just unthinkable! For Italy's sake let's hope he can differentiate between the natural human feeling of disappointment over Juve's past season, the uncertainty regarding the replacement coach, Del Piero's rash comments on his recent television party, et al...and see this is just a phase, an unnatural progression granted, but nonetheless one which will be overcome, though it will require more than just Andrea Agnelli's presence to make it happen.

However, if Signor Gigi is adamant about having already paid his dues to la Juve by remaining loyal through the Serie B campaign and its aftermath, and now wants a final bite of life at the very top... in which case, sadly, it's "Addio Italia!"

He had his surgery on his sciatic nerve problem yesterday.

So we could even see him back for the start of October, which is a lot better than January 2011 cheers.gif
