1 Cadetti (2006-07)

Claudio played for the Juventus from the beginning of the 2006 season but has spent this term on loan to fellow Serie A side Empoli along with other presitigious talent Giovinco, to learn his trade against the best sides in Italy. Marchisio has been with Juve since he was seven years old he was a support striker and modeled himself after Del Piero, all the way up till a coach changed him to a midfielder when he was 16 years old.

He made his first team debut against Martina in Coppa Italia, and as starter in the match against S.S.C. Napoli, 6 November, 2006.

He started to appear more regularly for Juventus and many hope he will be the future of the club, he is often compared to the former Juventus midfielder Marco Tardelli. During the latter part of the 2006-2007 season he became one of the key players in Didier Deschamps' squad; most notably playing the full 90 minutes for 6 consecutive matches since Juventus' 2-0 victory against Napoli.

Due to his good recent performances he has been called into the Italy U-21 squad along with fellow Juventus youngsters Sebastian Giovinco, Paolo De Ceglie and Domenico Criscito for the match with Albania.

He is back from his injury suffered at the turn of the year and it has slipped back into the Empoli side with ease, in the midst of more impressive performances.

Like Giovinco, Marchisio returns to Juventus for the 2008-09 season where he will look to become an important part in the coaches plans.

He has cut his hair icon_mrgreen.gif

He adds a lot to the team when one of Sissoko or Poulsen are out, he is ahead of an experienced international like Tiago which says a lot about both players. I like his style which is reminiscant of Daniele De Rossi, he can defend and attack and I hope he remains ahead of Tiago because he has the character to be a very good player.

Marchisio enjoys debut strike

Claudio Marchisio thanked Alessandro Del Piero and Stefano Borgonovo after breaking his Serie A duck for Juventus.

“It is a dream and I must thank Alex for a wonderful assist. I went forward like the Coach tells me to, even if I don't get to do it very much.”

His winner against Fiorentina tonight enabled Juve to temporarily catch Inter at the top of the table on 43 points.

“I hope that tomorrow night Inter can slip up and give us a good result so we can close in on the leaders. It's a long season yet and anything can happen.”

It was a tight 1-0 result, as the Viola had a goal incorrectly disallowed for offside and hit the bar, while there were also penalty appeals from Stevan Jovetic.

“Fiorentina play with a 4-3-3 and were putting Cristiano [Zanetti] and I under a lot of pressure. It's difficult to play against such sides for us with a 4-4-2, as for a while we barely got the ball,” continued Marchisio.

He already decided where his shirt would go after scoring his debut Serie A goal.

“I reserved my shirt for Borgonovo, a great man who brought me luck by giving me so much praise and dubbing me the new Marco Tardelli.”

Borgonovo is a former Milan and Fiorentina player who is suffering from ALS, the motor neurone condition also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

I like this lad a lot, I think he is a real class act and could be a very good international player. He seems to have a very good all round game and is living up to his early tag of 'new Gerrard'. Obviously he has miles to go to get to that level but he is currently an important player for Juventus and on a par with Sissoko and Zanetti right now and that is some going at 23.

Juve hand Marchisio extension

Juventus have extended the contract of midfielder Claudio Marchisio until the end of June 2014.

Marchisio is a homegrown talent who spent the 2007-08 season at Empoli and has impressed since returning to Turin.

“Claudio is an important element to our squad,” sporting director Alessio Secco said.

“He is a player with great experience in spite of the fact that he is still 23-years-old.”

The 23-year-old was clearly delighted at the latest show of faith from the Old Lady.

“I am very happy with the agreement,” Marchisio enthused. “This signature will allow my career to continue at a prestigious club that I consider as a family.

“I have worn the Bianconeri shirt for 14 years and I hope to continue to win as I did in the youth sector.

“I want to thank the club, the technical staff and my teammates for the belief they have shown in me in recent months and the fans for the love they show towards me game after game.”

Marchisio's 'almost perfect' debut

Claudio Marchisio could not help but be disappointed in his debut, as he came so close to making it “perfect” with a goal.

The Juventus midfielder earned his first senior Italy cap during last night’s 0-0 friendly with Switzerland and had a great chance to open the scoring.

“To debut with a goal would’ve been perfect. In any case, I am already happy to make my first appearance in the Italy jersey and wish I could’ve helped give us a win,” said Marchisio.

“Tonight the squad created many chances, even if the goal did not arrive.

“It is wonderful to be here with so many champions and I hope to have other opportunities. It is an honour to know the Coach has faith in me.”

Tardelli heaps praise on Marchisio

Juventus legend Marco Tardelli is a big admirer of Claudio Marchisio, the 23-year-old Italy international who plays at the heart of the Bianconeri's midfield.

Marchisio has really started to establish himself as a regular for Juventus and is fast becoming a favourite of Marcello Lippi, the Italy Coach.

“He's a lad I like a lot. The last time I saw him was in Turin with La Nazionale in the match against Bulgaria. Marchisio is not just a promising player he is already a great one,” Tardelli told Tuttosport.

Asked if Marchisio was a throwback to his own style of player, Tardelli replied: “I don't like these kinds of comparisons. Sure, he's a complete player, like I was. Perhaps he is even more professional than me. After all, I wasn't all that great.”

Speaking on his birthday, Tardelli went on to discuss Marchisio's best quality as a player.

“He can cover every one of the roles in midfield, on the left, the right and in the middle. He'll play wherever you put him. He always guarantees a high level performance and resolves a lot of problems for Ferrara,” Tardelli concluded.

Marchisio and Juventus are back in action tonight when they travel to Genoa looking for a win that will allow them to leapfrog Inter into first place in Serie A.

Marchisio meniscus scare

Italy’s medical staff have warned not only might Claudio Marchisio miss the Ireland game, the Juventus star could require knee surgery.

The young midfielder showed problems during training with the Azzurri over the last couple of days and it could well prove to be serious.

“The player has a meniscus condition on the outside edge of the left knee,” explained chief Italy medic Enrico Castellacci.

“He will stay with us for two or three days and on Friday we’ll evaluate whether he has recovered and can come with us to Dublin.

“Otherwise he will return home and the Juve medical staff will decide what action to take.”

There are fears a meniscus problem could require surgery and a long lay-off of at least a couple of months.

More tests and keyhole surgery may be needed to ascertain the extent of the damage.

Marchisio enjoys 'Messi style' goal

Claudio Marchisio was beaming after his magnificent goal sent Inter crashing to only their second Serie A defeat of the season.

“I have to say that against Cagliari and in the first half tonight my legs weren't responding as well as I'd hoped,” he said after the 2-1 Juventus victory.

“I am working very hard in training to recover from my injury and always give my best for the team.

“As for the goal, I am happy above all for the team, but also for the fans and I must confess a little for myself.”

The young midfielder netted a Leo Messi-style goal, controlling with his left foot, right, then finishing again with the left after skipping past Walter Samuel.

It is a victory that puts Juventus right back in the title race, five points adrift of Inter and still one behind Milan.

“Our belief and conviction changed everything. Inter are a top club, we know that, but beating them tonight was very important.

“We must continue like this and not lose our path, without forgetting that Milan are also in front.”

There was controversy late on with Felipe Melo's red card for a scuffle with Mario Balotelli, a former Under-21 international teammate of Marchisio's.

“Mario is a friend and I try to give him advice. Unfortunately people are wrong to insult him. The fans continually sniped at him, but all we wanted was the victory.

“Having said that, he needs to improve his behaviour and attitude.”

----------------------------

You could see that he wasn't really fit but even so he still had a very impressive game and what a goal, Marchisio is a vital player for us as he has the energy to get up and down and is a real threat around the box. Really proud to see a youth product come on so well.

Indeed he is.

Back in 2005-06, my friend was raving about the kid but I didn't even know him, except that he was the Primavera captain. Claudio is a rare breed these days. Local born and bred youth product of his hometown club, became a regular in his first season, Azzurrini regular and now a full international, captained the side not too long ago....predestined, as we Italians like to say. cool.gif

Blog: A far cry from Tardelli
Claudio Marchisio hasn’t had a good World Cup so far, but Antonio Labbate fears too much was expected of the youngster

It was former Fiorentina forward Stefano Borgonovo who first likened Claudio Marchisio to Marco Tardelli. We’ve seen few similarities so far at South Africa 2010. While Schizzo, as he was known, is remembered around the planet for his scream celebration in the 1982 Final, some of the harshest critics are asking why the present Juventus midfielder is even at this World Cup.

It would be easy to condemn the youngster for his performances against Paraguay and then New Zealand. He didn’t have good games in either. Hooked in both matches after 58 and 60 minutes respectively, the 24-year-old has arguably been the biggest flop in an Azzurri shirt so far this summer.

In his defence, the seemingly timid Marchisio has been played out of position. In game one he was used as an attacking midfielder, alla Simone Perrotta, in a 4-2-3-1 formation which would have worked better had Marcello Lippi actually decided to call-up the Romanista in the first place. In the second tie on Sunday, the Turin-native was started on the left of midfield in a more traditional 4-4-2.

Having again failed to leave any sort of impression on the match, Marchisio intimated that Lippi’s never-ending tactical experiments in recent weeks have caused confusion within the ranks. His new club boss, Gigi Del Neri, has also made it clear that Claudio isn’t being used correctly. “He’s a central midfielder and not a wide one,” he underlined.

Lippi may not be utilising Marchisio effectively, but the fact that the Viareggino has so far preferred to shoe-horn him into the side rather than omitting him from the line-up entirely speaks volumes about the boy’s ability – or at least the tactician’s belief in his potential.

Lippi clearly rates Marchisio, as does Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger who labelled him as an “emerging central midfielder” on the eve of the tournament. The real issue surrounding Marchisio though is not his positioning, but the actuality that he isn’t the finished product by any means.

He may wear the heavy stripes of the Old Lady, but he’s still establishing himself at club level. After progressing from the stands as a boyhood Juve fan to the edges of the pitch as a ball boy, he’s still not concluded the transformation process from a youth team product to an untouchable in the Bianconeri line-up – especially after the outfit’s struggles in 2009-10.

Marchisio may still have a role of some sort in Africa, but his style of play suggests that this World Cup may have come a little bit too early for him – he’ll be a better player, physically and mentally, in four years’ time.

Tardelli, a symbol of a generation in Italian football, had 1978 to acclimatise to international football at the highest level, 2010 could be Claudio’s appetiser.

-----------

I disagree that Marchisio was one of the biggest flops of the tournament.

But I like his last sentence, Claudio no doubt has the mental strength besides ability to go on to greater things.

Juve reply to Marchisio complaint

Juventus have replied to Claudio Marchisio’s “pessimistic” contract complaints with a statement on their official website.

Today the midfielder caused controversy when he wrote on his Facebook page that he was increasingly irritated at the lack of extension talks.

“I know you are reading about various proposals for me over the last few days. Yet again yesterday there was no news on my renewal.

“In all honesty, after two months I am starting to get pessimistic.”

The club replied a few hours later with a statement on their official website.

“With regards to Claudio Marchisio’s comments, Juventus point out that his contract expires in June 2014.

“The club is in constant contact with his agent, Carlo Pallavicino, with whom there have been several meetings in the last few weeks.

“Marchisio is a sporting treasure of Juventus, who have every interest in finding an agreement that satisfies both the requests of the player and the needs of the club.”

Coach Gigi Del Neri also gave his view on the situation in today’s Press conference.

“These are just little tiffs, because the club never hid its desire to reason with Marchisio around a table,” said the tactician.

“I think both have the reciprocal desire to carry on this rapport. The club replied that Marchisio has a contract and will try to solve his problems. It’s not as if he has to leave.”

Marchisio needs to chillax, it is the end of the transfer window and the club is busy. He is a bandiera, he'll be here for years.

Marchisio: I only want Juve

Claudio Marchisio has put to rest any doubts about his future by saying that he only wants Juventus.

The 24-year-old midfielder has yet to agree a new contract in Turin amid interest from Inter.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Marchisio said: “There has never been a contract problem and there is no hurry on my part.

“Eventually we'll talk about an adjustment, certainly not a extension. I am not fed up with Juve. I am not looking for another experience. And I angry because things have come out that aren't true.”

When asked if he regretted writing that he was worried about his future on Facebook, Marchisio replied: “I might have made a mistake in writing that phrase, but Facebook is only an instrument to stay in touch with the fans.

“I repeat: I want to go and meet the club and stay here because I am very tied to Juventus. And I know that Juve are tied to me.”

Marchisio then turned his attention to Juventus' start to the season and Gigi Del Neri's belief that his side isn't a title contender.

“He wanted to motivate us to show our qualities. Aside from Inter, only time will tell who is Scudetto material. But everyone has changed a lot. We need to work and improve.

“We are a strong team, but we must show it in every game. The Europa League is a very important competition with spectacular games: there is Man City in our group… we will give our maximum.

The Press will still continue with their bs rumours, but I won't bat an eyelid, he's not going anywhere.

If only Claudio Marchisio's Turinese accent was stronger, it would make the stereotype of 'local lad done good' jump out of the page at you. The Juventus midfielder, though, while retaining several of the peculiar traits of his origin, has matured too steadily on and off the pitch to be cast in the role of someone whose imagination and dreams barely stretched beyond the confines of Chieri, the small town right outside Turin where he was born in January 1986.

GettyImages
Claudio Marchisio had Alessandro Del Piero as an idol.
As the youngest in a Juventus-supporting family, a young Marchisio would dream of one day donning the famous black-and-white shirt, following in the footsteps of his favourite player, Alessandro Del Piero, whose poster adorned a wall in his bedroom. Along with the rest of his season-ticket holding family, Marchisio was in the uncomfortable, poorly-sighted stands of the now demolished Stadio Delle Alpi on that early December day in 1994 when Del Piero scored one of the most memorable goals in the recent history of Italian football.

By that time, Marchisio was already a member of Juventus' youth system, where he wore the No. 10 shirt as a tribute to Del Piero. His ambition to be like Alex stretched to becoming a striker, but his coaches detected something else: that his strong running, stamina and body type were more conducive to a career in midfield.

Evidence of that came in 1998, when a 12-year-old Marchisio, wearing that No. 10 jersey a couple of sizes too big, galloped from one end of the muddy pitch to the other, exchanged a quick one-two with Paolo De Ceglie and lobbed the goalkeeper with a sweet touch. When later shown footage from that goal (recorded by his father) during a show hosted by Juve's in-house TV channel, Marchisio almost broke down in tears at the thought of having come so far since that day.

Kids scoring wonder goals against overmatched opponents, though, are a dime-a-dozen and it is a testimony to his attitude, determination and work ethic that Marchisio made the transition to professional player and, now, a regular member of the Juventus starting midfield.

His place had been threatened during the summer. As soon as Antonio Conte began installing his system - be it 4-4-2 or 4-2-4 - and Juventus signed Andrea Pirlo and Arturo Vidal (who looked like the ideal central midfield partner for the former Milan passmaster), insiders started wondering what would happen with Marchisio, who had just extended his contract to 2016. They should not have worried.

Marchisio had, after all, been a jack-of-all-trades for Juventus and Italy for a number of years already. His multidimensional skills have worked both for and against him, as coaches felt free to move him around in order to accommodate players with lesser qualities in their own positions.

As an example, during the 2009-10 season, when Ciro Ferrara was in charge, Marchisio played either on the left or on the right of a three-man midfield in a 4-3-1-2, was a nominal left winger several times in a 4-4-2 and also partnered Felipe Melo in central midfield in the same formation.

Marcello Lippi used him in left midfield in the only two matches Marchisio started in the ill-fated - and badly coached - 2010 World Cup campaign, and when the current season dawned doubts over his best position arose again. "He's a superb central midfielder, and that's where he will play. He can also play wider but only in an emergency. End of the story," was how Conte replied to several questions on the matter, and you could picture the player himself nodding in agreement.

Not that he would ever start a controversy over it. A soft-spoken, down-to-earth lad who has stronger opinions than the average footballer, but is reluctant to spout them, Marchisio has led a stable life for some years, having married the daughter of a former Torino youth team player. "The members of her family have now been converted into Juve fans," he told Guerin Sportivo magazine two years ago, having bought a house not far from Juve's training centre at Vinovo, right outside Turin. He has also admitted to loving National Geographic documentaries which sets him apart from the bling-bling, Louis Vuitton bag-carrying fraternity he mingles with.

As he told Guerino in that interview, he's proud of the image he projects, so that "someone sitting in a restaurant and looking at me sitting across from him would think I'm a clean-cut person" and this could probably fit into the mythical 'Juventus style' more than the dozens of hollow examples that have been thrown at an unsuspecting public over the years. His nickname is, after all, Il Principino (The Little Prince), which seems perfectly suited to his manners and the understated sense of superiority Turin-born people often project [I should know: I am one of them].

Marchisio, according to those who have met him, mixes his young age and good manners in an attractive way. His heavily-tattooed right arm gives away his penchant for showing off, but this is somewhat tempered by his calm voice and an apparent restraint even when, as he's been doing with gusto this season, he scores goals. He netted his fifth of the season on Sunday, rounding out Juve's 3-0 win over the impostors who pass themselves off as Palermo players whenever the pink 'uns play away from home, and remarked afterwards how Conte has helped him find his better position.

As is well-known already, Conte went from a 4-2-4/4-4-2 formation to a 4-1-4-1/4-3-3 in order to put both Vidal and Marchisio on the pitch alongside Pirlo, and it's been Vidal's non-stop running and covering abilities that have liberated Marchisio from a sole defensive role and sprung him forward. A master at timing runs to perfection and attacking space before it appears, thus negating a defence's ability to react, Marchisio has often been compared to former Juventus and Italy star Marco Tardelli. In fact, many are predicting a similar career path for him.

GettyImages
Marchisio is becoming more important for his country as well.
Tardelli was perhaps more ferocious as a tackler - he was once booked inside five seconds of a match against Milan for lunging at playmaker Gianni Rivera - but is evolving into a better goalscorer. He opened his account for Italy against Serbia last month, rewarding Cesare Prandelli's faith in him. Oddly enough, Marchisio's full Serie A debut had come against Prandelli's Fiorentina in August 2007, while he was on loan at Empoli alongside fellow Turin-born midfielder Sebastian Giovinco, and his first goal also came against Fiorentina eighteen months later.

Showing skill with both feet - particularly when scoring against Inter in 2009 - his father's role in his development kicked in. As a former amateur player who was well aware of the advantage two-footed players had over the opponents, Stefano Marchisio had taught Claudio to use his left (i.e. "wrong") foot when he was barely seven years old, creating muscle and movement memory which his coaches have subsequently put to greater use.

With a slender build, just like players once used to be, Marchisio is obviously not a finished product and has had to fight a tendency to let games pass him by, but Juve's new look seems perfectly suited to his skills. Having soon learnt how to use his other foot, he may now have to apply the same principle to his hands: he raised his right one with an open palm on Sunday to signal his fifth Serie A goal of the season and there's a chance he will soon have to show he can do the same with his left too.

Scored a peach of a goal against Cesena and he wasn't even playing his best. Nerves of steel.

He's become decisive now, rather than on the edge of the team.

Players like him who can dribble and shoot off both feet with great technique are not easy to find.
