Serie A Week 33 - 26/4/09 (14.00 UK)
Bologna 2 - 0 Genoa
Di Vaio pen 15 (B ), Terzi 24 (B )
Stadio Dall'Ara
Bologna keep their hopes of escaping relegation alive, but Genoa's second consecutive defeat suggests the bubble has burst.
There was a great deal to play for in this game, as Genoa needed a victory to recapture fourth following Fiorentina's win on Saturday, while the Rossoblu had dropped into the relegation zone. The Grifone's record here was poor with just two top flight wins and 15 draws in 34 visits.
Giuseppe Papadopulo had to do without Francesco Antonioli, Cesar, Luigi Lavecchia, Davide Bombardini, Miguel Angel Britos, Davide Marchini and the suspended Sergio Volpi. Gian Piero Gasperini welcomed top scorer Diego Milito back a month after his thigh strain and hoped that would kick-start the side who suffered a shock home defeat to Lazio last week.
There was a minute's silence before kick-off in honour of ex-Genoa player Franco Rotella, who died after a long illness midweek.
Bosko Jakovic wasted a golden opportunity after 13 minutes when Raffaele Palladino rolled across for him to hit from the penalty spot, but he weakly side-footed straight at the goalkeeper.
Some disastrous defending cost Genoa dearly moments later. Rubinho ran off his line and mistimed it, but after Salvatore Bocchetti cleared Marco Di Vaio's effort off the line, he foolishly lost his footing and brought down Mingazzini. Di Vaio converted the penalty low and central to give Bologna the lead and set a new personal best of 21 goals.
Di Vaio pounced on an Ivan Juric error and his angled drive was fingertipped round the far post.
Bologna doubled their advantage from a set play, as Martins Adailton whipped a free kick towards the back post, where Christian Terzi's scuffed volley proved effective enough to beat Rubinho.
Genoa poured forward and went close when Domenico Criscito just failed to make contact with Mesto's deflected cross. The visitors should have pulled one back through Palladino, but he completely mistimed the header on Giandomenico Mesto's cross from close range.
Palladino went so close to getting Genoa back into it after the restart, but was unlucky to hit the upright with his step-over and angled drive.
Yet Di Vaio almost netted a third for Bologna, scuffing Massimo Mutarelli's cutback under pressure from defenders.
Juric required a goalline clearance, as Di Vaio sent Francesco Valiani clear down the right and the shot beat the 'keeper, but not the desperate Genoa defender.
Milito had a good chance in stoppages, his chip off target and penalty appeals waved away for a sliding challenge.
Genoa: Rubinho; Biava, Ferrari (Olivera 76), Bocchetti (Milanetto 46); Mesto, Thiago Motta, Juric, Criscito; Jankovic (Sculli 46), Milito, Palladino
Ref: Orsato

Really poor result for Genoa. Di Vaio keeps up his sensational scoring for the season, he really would be keeping them up on his own if they can achieve it.

Floccari on his way to Genoa? Preparing for the sale of Milito I guess:
Napoli miss out on Floccari Friday 1 May, 2009 Napoli have lost out to Genoa on the chance to sign Atalanta striker Sergio Floccari, according to President Aurelio De Laurentiis.
Napoli had agreed a £12m deal with Atalanta for Floccari, but the player showed little interest in joining them once Genoa confirmed their desire to buy him.
“Floccari will not be arriving here,” De Laurentiis said. “I believe that he has gone to Genoa. I have noticed with Italian players there is always something that doesn't suit them about coming to Napoli.
“It happened in the day of Ottavio Bianchi and it's repeating itself now. To them I say: 'Dear Italian players, I want you to do well but come here and be convinced that this is the true stage for your profession.
“We need a lot of love and don't want people who are incapable of loving this city or its football club,'” he concluded.

Milito's departure is pretty much a certainty now, so Floccari isn't a bad replacement.

Milito 'will stay in Italy'
Diego Milito’s “future is in Italy,” according to his agent, fuelling reports of interest from Juventus and Inter.
The Genoa hitman is expected to leave Marassi at the end of the season after scoring 16 goals in his debut Serie A season.
He has been linked with the likes of Real Madrid, Tottenham and Bayern Munich, but hints the field is narrowed down to the peninsula.
“So far any reports of Diego about to join one club or another are just rumours, albeit ones that have reached my ears,” said Fernando Hidalgo.
“His price-tag has tripled compared to what [Genoa President Enrico] Preziosi paid for him last summer, which was £8m.
“We certainly won’t force Genoa to part with Diego and in fact would gladly remain with the Grifone. It’s up to the President to decide.
“We are also aware of the fact that Diego will turn 30 this year and so it’s only right that certain offers from prestigious sides are taken into consideration. We’ll see what happens.”
Preziosi has suggested recently that he would be prepared to listen to a large bid for the Argentine striker.
“One thing is for certain,” added the agent. “Next year Diego will continue to drive the Italian defences crazy, because he is very happy at Genoa.
“Even if Preziosi decided to sell him, he would listen exclusively to proposals from another Italian club.”
Seems all the more bizarre given the fact he will be facing his 'beloved' Genoa

Serie A Week 34 - 3/5/09 (19.30 UK)
Genoa 3 - 1 Sampdoria
Milito 29, 73, 93 (G), Campagnaro 45 (S)
Stadio Ferraris
Diego Milito bagged a hat-trick in a fiery 3-1 Derby della Lanterna win over Sampdoria that saw three red cards.
The Derby della Lanterna is always a heated affair, especially in a season where the Grifone have had the upper hand. Challenging for a Champions League spot, Genoa will end the campaign above their rivals for the first time in 27 years and already won the Stracittadina 1-0 back in December - their first triumph in seven years - but two straight defeats to Lazio and Bologna saw them drop to fifth place. Samp are in the Coppa Italia Final and determined to make their fans happy in this one-off clash.
Only Claudio Bellucci, Ruben Olivera and Alessio Scarpi were on the treatment table, so there were essentially full squads to choose from. Genoa had lost their last three 'home' derbies, a streak that had only happened once before in the 1950s.
Samp got off to a very aggressive start and two minutes in Antonio Cassano found Giampaolo Pazzini for a shot deflected over from seven yards. The tension was immediately evident with a series of fouls before Domenico Criscito was booked for going through the back of Cassano.
Diego Milito went on a slalom through the Samp penalty area and a lucky ricochet almost set up his teammates, but Stefano Lucchini was able to clear. Luca Castellazzi then pounced on Giuseppe Sculli's cutback before it could reach Rossi.
Matteo Ferrari and Paolo Sammarco also went into the book in a very fast-paced and frenetic match. Genoa almost gave a goal away on 26 minutes, as Angelo Palombo dispossessed Giuseppe Biava at the byline and crossed for Cassano to balloon over.
At the other end Milito shrugged off two defenders in the D to hit a low right-foot shot that Castellazzi did very well to get down and palm round the near post. However, from that corner Biava flicked it on for Milito to tap in at the back post, his 17th goal in 27 Serie A games. El Principe had not netted since March 22.
Criscito smashed a daisy-cutter across the face of goal that skimmed the far upright. In first half stoppages Andrea Raggi did well to intercept Milito's cross for Palladino and there was panicked defending on the corner.
Deep into first half stoppages Sampdoria got their equaliser. Palombo's snapshot from distance took a deflection and Campagnaro was quick to pounce with an angled drive from 12 yards, although replays suggest he was offside when the original shot was hit.
After the restart the Blucerchiati had another great opportunity, as Lucchini knocked a free kick back in from the byline only for Sammarco to blast over from a very promising position.
Biava drilled just wide and Gennaro Delvecchio was on the pitch for 30 seconds when he was booked for a row with Biava. Lucchini limped off to make way for Daniele Gastaldello.
Salvatore Bocchetti was accidentally kicked in the face by Pazzini during a corner and was bleeding heavily from his nose. The Under-21 international defender still insisted on playing on.
Genoa restored their lead in fortunate circumstances, though Milito was as always alert to every opportunity. A Sampdoria player's clearance hit a Genoa shin to ricochet into the box, turning into an assist for Milito to thump across the face of goal. The striker was clearly offside, but as it was a ricochet and not an intentional pass, his position could theoretically be considered valid.
Cassano was booked for dissent after screaming at the referee, as he had been complaining all night 'they won't let me play.'
The tension was palpable and exploded four minutes from time in a brawl between Ferrari and Pazzini. Bocchetti had done brilliantly to anticipate Pazzini in the box and Ferrari thought the striker had dived, but as they argued others piled in and an unseemly fight broke out. Sokratis Papastathopoulos prevented it getting worse by holding back Sampdoria's Franceschini.
Play resumed for all of 30 seconds before another fight broke out as Rubinho palmed a dangerous ball off Delvecchio's foot from six yards and the goalkeeper was injured in the collision. Thiago Motta and Campagnaro were also sent off for their part in this second scuffle.
There were six minutes of stoppages and Samp poured forward against nine-man Genoa, Rubinho smothering a Padalino low drive. However, as the Blucerchiati laid siege they left themselves hopelessly unbalanced and allowed Genoa to score a third! Palladino went from the centre-circle and there was nobody in the Sampdoria half, so he drew out the goalkeeper and rolled across for Milito to tap his hat-trick into an empty net.
There was still time for yet another fight between Gastaldello and Rubinho.
This game is always mental, the crowd whips the players up.
Milito is such a vital player for Genoa, I don't know how they could possibly play in the CL without him or Thiago Motta if they got there. Sent off: Ferrari 87 (G), Campagnaro 90 (S), Thiago Motta 90 (G)

Preziosi releases Milito and Motta
Genoa President Enrico Preziosi admits with great sadness that Diego Milito and Thiago Motta are “destined to leave us."
The striker has been in talks with Inter – as confirmed by his agent – and a deal is said to be at an advanced stage.
“Someone like Milito is destined to leave us,” sighed Preziosi. “We are not drowning and therefore are not forced to sell Milito. After all, it could be that I don’t like the offer.
“Up until now I have not had direct contact with Inter, but I do know they are not behaving badly. It is normal for a club to listen to the player and his agent first.”
Milito has been one of the revelations of this Genoa side with 19 goals, but the other is also on his way out after just one campaign.
Thiago Motta was picked up as a free agent following an injury-ravaged spell at Barcelona and proved to be a very wise investment.
“The money I would eventually get from Thiago Motta would be reinvested to form a squad at the level of the commitments that await us,” added the President.
I'm sure Genoa fans will be upset but this is great business by the club. They could sell a player picked up on a free who no-one wanted because of his injury record and an albeit excellent goalscorer they picked up on the cheap, probably for between €25m-€30m.
I don't think they will get a direct replacement for either player and they might take time to settle but in the long term they will buy 4-6 players with that money and wages saved.

As posted in the Inter forum, Genoa have agreed to sell Thiago Motta and Diego Milito to Inter for a combined fee also with Robert Acquafresca coming in the other direction. Fee undisclosed but expect it to be over €20m.
Genoa have also added another striker, signing Sergio Floccari from Atalanta for €11m.

Hernan Crespo is '99.9%' certain to join Genoa according to their president.
Diego Milito's brace is not enough to keep Genoa in the race for fourth, but above all left Torino on the edge of relegation. The tension exploded at the final whistle with a huge brawl.
The clubs are twinned and Genoa had already secured their Europa League qualification, so cynical observers were watching this game closely. Torino desperately needed the points to stay out of the relegation zone and were buoyed by last week's 2-1 win at Napoli.
Eugenio Corini, Elvis Abbruscato, Marco Di Loreto, Cesare Natali and Paolo Zanetti were out, while Matteo Paro, Giuseppe Biava and Raffaele didn't make the trip. Genoa's last top flight victory here was a 6-3 result in April 1941, but they had the stronger start and pinned the Granata back for the opening minutes.
There was bad news for Toro when Roberto Stellone pulled up with a suspected thigh strain and limped off the field.
Matteo Sereni performed a desperate save with his trailing foot to deny a Thiago Motta snapshot from distance.
Pisano foolishly went straight in to trip Marco Rossi on the edge of the area and the penalty was inevitable. Milito, who has already agreed a move to Inter, stepped up and sent Sereni the wrong way to put Genoa in front.
Milito went close to a second, but Toro were pouring forward with the force of desperation and equalised with two defenders combining. Angelo Ogbonna rose above the crowd to knock down the ball for Franceschini to come sliding in at the back post.
On the stroke of half-time Sereni was almost propelled into the back of his own net by a Thiago Motta blockbuster.
Straight after the restart Genoa restored their advantage. Ruben Olivera scored a wonderful free kick last week and repeated the trick, curling into the top near corner from around 20 metres.
It didn't take long, as around 80 seconds later Rolando Bianchi let an Ignazio Abate chip fall over his shoulder and spun round to place another lob over the goalkeeper to draw Toro level. Blerim Dzemaili picked up an injury during the move and made way for Jurgen Saumel.
Sereni tipped a Milito free kick out from under the crossbar and on that corner Bosko Jankovic's diving header was over.
Colombo cut back from the byline for Bianchi and Rubinho got down well, but fell awkwardly and hurt his wrist.
Nicola Ventola thought he'd scored Toro's third on 77 minutes when he smartly dribbled between two defenders and the angled drive went past Rubinho, but his finish was too weak and Omar Milanetto cleared it off the line!
Sereni had to use his legs again to deny Milito, but in the final minute Genoa took the lead through Milito! El Principe rose to nod in an Ivan Juric cross from the left.
The tension got to Abate, who was shown a straight red card for a horrid tackle from behind on Rossi, which sparked a scuffle. After the final whistle it turned into a gigantic brawl with fist-fights breaking out all over the pitch. This could have heavy repercussions for the final round and banned players on both sides.
Torino and Genoa have blamed each other for the horrific brawl that ended the game at the Olimpico today.
After the final whistle of a 3-2 Rossoblu victory, a huge fist-fight broke out on the pitch with members of both teams and even some fans who had invaded the field.
“It was the fault of an important Genoa player, Thiago Motta, who at the end went in front of our bench and told us to be quiet,” insisted Toro Coach Giancarlo Camolese.
“My men reacted to provocation from the Genoa squad. These are situations we would not like to see, as even if a team does have 30 points more than their opponents, they cannot afford gestures like that.
“It is difficult to keep calm after all the tension of the week built up.”
It was a particularly strange brawl because the two clubs are twinned. This had prompted questions beforehand over the outcome, as Torino needed a win while Genoa had nothing more to play for.
Yet the Rossoblu were leading twice before Diego Milito’s last-gasp header secured the shock victory and sparked the brawl.
“I ask myself why people are amazed that we tried to win a match,” said incredulous Genoa Coach Gian Piero Gasperini.
“Evidently we have all become accustomed to these soft performances in the final weeks of the season, but it doesn’t have to be like that.
“We still had an objective, as we could’ve stayed in the race for fourth if Fiorentina hadn’t equalised at Lecce in stoppages.
“On the one hand we can understand Torino’s disappointment and anger, but on the other they cannot blame my players for their situation. This isn’t the game where they lost their place in Serie A.
“Relegation is part of the sport. If they’re going to react like this then maybe we should remove relegations and just keep the same old teams, see how everyone likes that!”
---------------------
It's strange how there is this kind of unwritten rule in calcio where if two teams at the end of the season are comfortably placed in the league and the game is tied they just play out a draw.
Thiago Motta sounds like he will fit in perfectly at Inter.
I will find a video of the brawl

Blog: Generous dreams
As Steve Wilson outlines, Genoa appear set to buy a squad for Champions League football when the Europa League is all that is on their menu
Hernan Crespo, Ricardo Quaresma, Robert Acquafresca and Giuseppe Rossi. That is quite a list of targets. Three of the four are Champions League quality and the fourth looks to have the calibre to make it in Europe’s top competition. Any club looking to recruit these kind of names must have a ticket for the continent’s top table, mustn’t they?
Genoa are guaranteed fifth place, although they could finish the season with only their head-to-head record against Fiorentina denying them a Champions League berth. But the fact remains their second ever European campaign will be in the new Europa League. This sets up a dangerous Catch 22 situation for Gian Piero Gasperini.
If the Rossoblu take the Europa League as seriously as they did its predecessor back in the early 90s, when they reached the semi-finals and became the first Italians to beat Liverpool at Anfield on the way, they can be a real contender for Europe’s secondary trophy. I would be the first to congratulate them if they took the competition seriously and went at it gung-ho.
However, in doing that they will be spreading themselves thinly across two difficult competitions. If Genoa take the Europa League seriously will they be able to replicate, or better, their top five Serie A finish this season? Perhaps, if they have managed to nail down one or two of the aforementioned transfer targets. But what cost if they bring in those players and fail?
The likes of Crespo and Quaresma won’t come cheap when it comes to their salaries. If they then arrive and the club find themselves embroiled in mid-table mediocrity then what will the club have gained other than financial troubles? You have to admire their ambition and determination to better themselves, but it is a move fraught with risks.
Clubs like Roma and Fiorentina have made themselves Champions League regulars over time. It has taken a slow and methodical process to get them there. You cannot just buy in a squad overnight and expect to become serious contenders. I’d love to see Genoa challenge the top four, but I fear they may be about to write some cheques their ability cannot cash.
I think they can afford it for one or two seasons, they have just made a killing off Inter for Thiago Motta and Milito, but those four players would cost around €30m unless they do a deal with their new best friends Inter for Quaresma and Acquafresca.

Preziosi gives transfer update
Genoa President Enrico Preziosi has given the latest on his bid to sign Ricardo Quaresma, Hernan Crespo and Nenad Tomovic.
The Grifone are looking to strengthen after securing a place in next season's Europa League.
But they also have to find replacements for stars Diego Milito and Thiago Motta, who are headed for Inter.
“We have invested £10m in half the rights to Quaresma,” Preziosi told Teleradiostereo.
“There is an agreement with Inter and we just have to sort the situation out with the player.
“Today we have an important meeting for Crespo. He is happy to come to Genoa and he is the ideal striker for us after picking up Sergio Floccari.
“This morning we also closed a deal for Red Star defender Tomovic. We will take him to our pre-season training camp, but then he could be sent out on loan.
“We are also interested in Lorenzo Di Silvestri because he is a player with a great future.
“We know that his contract expires in 2010, but we don't want to be sly and we will go about things in the correct way with Lazio.
“We have already expressed an interest to Claudio Lotito and we are waiting to hear more from Lazio.”
Anyway it looks like Preziosi is trying to build a super Genoa, perhaps they might be great once again? I hope he doesn't get his fingers burnt though.

Genoa 'have Quaresma in hand'
Genoa President Enrico Preziosi has announced that he is “certain we will conclude negotiations for Ricardo Quaresma next week.”
The patron has long stated that the Inter winger will be joining his side in a co-ownership deal after the six-month loan spell at Chelsea.
“I am certain we will conclude negotiations for Quaresma next week,” Preziosi told Radio Radio TV.
It would give the Portuguese star another shot at Serie A following his dismal initial impression at Inter.
Under-21 international striker Robert Acquafresca was due to join Genoa as part of the transfer, but appears to be headed for Atalanta.
“I think he will go elsewhere with a team able to guarantee him first team football.”
Meanwhile, Preziosi – who has already sold Diego Milito and Thiago Motta to Inter – gave an overview of Genoa’s other transfer dealings.
“Our intention is to keep [Raffaele] Palladino and [Domenico] Criscito. We will soon meet with Juventus and I am sure we’ll reach an agreement.
“I hope Rubinho will reconsider his decision to leave and renew his contract with us, but if not there are two top class goalkeepers available.
“We were interested in [Lorenzo] De Silvestri, but I think it’s difficult to get Lazio into a negotiation for him.”
Rodrigo Palacio’s move to Genoa should “be completed soon,” admits Boca Juniors President Jorge Ameal.
The Serie A club sent emissaries to Buenos Aires this week for crunch talks over the striker and there are reports that a deal has already been struck.
“We hope that Palacio’s move to Genoa can be completed soon,” Ameal told television stations in Argentina.
“There have been some important meetings and they continue today. We are on the right track, that is all I can say for the moment, but there is nothing signed yet.”
Genoa President Enrico Preziosi was more open in declaring the deal done save for the final details.
“My son is in Argentina and is concluding the deal for Palacio,” he told Radio Incontro.
“Once that is finalised, we will turn our attention to Sebastian Battaglia. My son discussed him with Boca, but they haven’t got back with a definitive answer yet.”
Lazio are also interested in midfielder Battaglia.
Genoa look like they will be strong again next year, despite losing Milito and Thiago Motta.

Official: Palacio joins Genoa
It is now official, as Boca Juniors hitman Rodrigo Palacio has passed his medical and signed for Genoa.
“I am very happy,” grinned the Argentine following this evening’s announcement on the club website.
The 27-year-old passed his medical “with flying colours” and put pen to paper on a new four-year contract.
“Genoa are a great club and this is a wonderful opportunity for me. I think playing at Marassi will feel like the Bombonera in Buenos Aires.”
Palacio has already won eight trophies in his career and featured for the Argentina squad with one goal in eight caps.
He hopes impressing in Serie A this season can earn him a place in Diego Armando Maradona’s 2010 World Cup squad.
Although also linked with moves to Lazio and Palermo in the past, this is his first foray outside Argentina.
He began his career at Huracan, going on to Banfield and then Boca Juniors in 2005.

How's the cricket team doing?
The club was founded on 7 September 1893[3] as Genoa Cricket & Athletic Club. In its earliest years, it only competed in athletics and cricket. Since the club was set up to represent England abroad, the original shirts worn by the organisation were white, the same colour as the England national team shirt.[3] At first Italians were not permitted to join as it was a British sporting club abroad.[3] Genoa's activities took place in the north-west of the city in the Campasso area, at the Piazza d'Armi. The men who founded the initial cricket and athletics club were;[3]
Charles De Grave Sells S. Blake G. Green W. Riley Daniel G. Fawcus Sandys E. De Thierry Jonathan Summerhill Sr. Jonathan Summerhill Jr. Sir Charles Alfred Payton
On 10 April 1897[4] the footballing section of the club was officially opened by James Richardson Spensley.[9] It was amongst the oldest in Italian football at the time, the only other founded clubs were two in Turin.[10] With the football section of the club opened, Italians were allowed to join and found a new ground in the form of Ponte Carrega. The first friendly match took place at home, against a mixed team of Internazionale Torino and FBC Torinese; Genoa lost 1–0.[3] Not long after, Genoa recorded its first victory away against UPS Alessandria winning 2–0. Friendly games also took place against various British sailors such as those from HMS Revenge.[
another english connection is willy garbutt
He moved to Genoa, Italy (which is described as the most English town in Italy), to work on the docks after retiring from playing football, in order to support his family.
He was appointed as the new head coach of Genoa CFC on 30 July 1912, with no previous experience and only aged 29. It is not clear how he came to be their manager, some reports say he was recommended by Vittorio Pozzo[5]; who would go on to coach Italy to two World Cups. Others state it was Genoa's youth coach, an Irishman named Thomas Coggins, who pushed for Garbutt's appointment.
Garbutt restructured the training regimes, putting a heavy emphasis on players physical fitness and tactics. This was not the only part of managing in Italy that Garbutt set the proto-type for; he conducted Italy's first ever paid player transfers, where he signed two players from Andrea Doria and one from A.C. Milan. As well as making Genoa the first Italian football club to play outside of Italy; thanks to his connections back home in England he was able to take Genoa to play his old club Reading.
From when Garbutt first took over in 1912, until 1927 when he left the club, Genoa were victorious in the Italian Football Championship three different times; 1915, 1923 and 1924. The latter of which to this day, is the last time Genoa won the Serie A championship

Genoa confirm Zapater deal
Genoa have confirmed that “only details” separate them from signing young Spanish midfielder Alberto Zapater.
“We have a deal with the player and only details separate us from completing the transfer, so I really don’t think this could collapse,” President Enrico Preziosi told Sky Italia television.
The 24-year-old currently plays for Real Zaragoza and has featured at Under-20 and Under-21 level for Spain.
“He is an important player, though I don’t believe he is the new Thiago Motta, as they are different players. He can do very well with Houssine Kharja.
“Zapater’s contract was set to expire, which is why we managed to pay less for him than his true value.”
Genoa have made many changes to their squad, as Diego Milito, Thiago Motta and Matteo Ferrari left, but Rodrigo Palacio, Sergio Floccari, Hernan Crespo, Pepe, Emiliano Moretti and Kharja are just some of the new entries.
“In terms of quality and strength in depth I’d say we are stronger than last season, so we hope to stay at the same high level,” added Preziosi.
“Nobody else will arrive in attack, as Palacio is a better signing than Milito and Motta. By selling them to Inter we made a £16.5m profit, but have also spent more than anyone on the transfer market in Italy.”
Genoa certainly busy spending the money they got from Inter, I think they could be even better this year but Thiago Motta's creativity and Milito's goals will be impossible to replace directly, they need to spread it out.

They have exchanged him for Marco Amelia, Italy's number 3.
Genoa stay top after a dramatic 4-1 victory over Napoli that saw three red cards, two penalties and Hernan Crespo's first goal for the Rossoblu.
Two of the dark horses came face to face at Marassi with the Rossoblu hoping to maintain their perfect record. Bosko Jankovic, Ivan Juric and Salvatore Bocchetti were sidelined, while Napoli lost Juan Zuniga, Amodio and Jesus Datolo. Sergio Floccari made his comeback to lead the Genoa trident. The Partenopei had won just three of Roberto Donadoni's 13 games in charge, but left Ezequiel Lavezzi on the bench.
Napoli poured forward from the start in a very aggressive manner, but Genoa went close with Giuseppe Sculli's header flashing across the face of goal. Morgan De Sanctis had his palms stung by Domenico Criscito's fierce snapshot and Salvatore Aronica dived in to prevent Sculli meeting the loose ball.
At the other end Fabio Quagliarella's overhead kick turned into an assist for the unmarked Inacio Pia', but Marco Amelia beat away the half-volley from nine yards.
Paolo Cannavaro charged down a Sculli angled drive in the box, while Marek Hamsik smashed wide.
There was a sudden shock to the system after 27 minutes when the referee flashed a straight red card at Criscito. The Genoa defender, who was born in Naples, was sent off for swearing at the referee after a challenge on Christian Maggio. It seemed fairly harsh, as the phrase is often heard on football fields.
10-man Genoa still attacked and Giandomenico Mesto drilled wide from the edge of the box.
The tension was sky high and on 37 minutes chaos broke out when Amelia went to close down Campagnaro, who kept going and kicked the goalkeeper in the head. Genoa were furious and sparked a scuffle that eventually saw the ex-Sampdoria full-back booked. Amelia received treatment for that nasty knock to the forehead in a long delay, but was able to continue.
He had barely recovered when Napoli took the lead. Quagliarella slide-rule pass sent Hamsik into the box and round Amelia, placing an angled drive into the far corner practically from the byline.
Sokratis Papastathopoulos dribbled past two challenges in the box, but was eventually closed down by Michele Pazienza. Sculli was fortunate to get away with a yellow card when he aimed a similar insult at the referee to the one that saw Criscito sent off.
Amelia smothered a Hamsik half-volley from distance, but from that goal clearance Sculli ran into the box and was bundled over by Campagnaro. It was the defender's second yellow card and a penalty, meaning both teams were now playing with 10 men. Floccari stepped up and sent Morgan De Sanctis the wrong way to equalise six minutes into stoppages.
Rodrigo Palacio replaced Sculli for the second half. After the restart Matteo Contini was fortunate to avoid a second booking for his tackle from behind on Giandomenico Mesto. From that free kick, Alberto Zapater flicked it on for Giuseppe Biava at the back post, who failed to make contact by a matter of inches.
Marco Rossi horribly wasted a fine team move with his intercepted weak pass to the unmarked Zapater.
Genoa took the lead for the first time at Marassi with an absolutely stunning goal from Mesto! He gathered 22 metres out and seemed to be lining up a cross, but unleashed a blockbuster of a right-foot shot that curled past a stunned De Sanctis into the far top corner.
Argentines Ezequiel Lavezzi and Hernan Crespo came on along with Walter Gargano. Biava risked scoring an own goal with his odd deflection on Cannavaro's cross.
A stunning one-handed De Sanctis save palmed Zapater's downward header off the goalline on 65 minutes. At the other end Amelia beat away a powerful Quagliarella free kick.
The third Genoa goal was an all-Argentine affair. Palacio went off on the counter from midfield and rolled across for the unmarked Crespo, who kept his cool to side-foot the ball in off the inside of the far post.
It was almost 4-1, as Mesto's shot bounced off De Sanctis' chest and nobody was ready to tap in. Papastathopoulos used his body to block Lavezzi's turn in the box.
In the final minutes Houssine Kharja sprinted down the left and crossed low for Palacio, who was tripped by Aronica for another penalty and red card. Kharja went to take the spot-kick and slowly rolled it into the near corner to send the goalkeeper the wrong way and consolidate Genoa's 100 per cent record.
Very entertaining game, hilarious to see Criscito sent off so early against his home town team, for nothing really either lol.
Genoa are going to be some force this season, CL guarentees imo, and they play very attacking and attractive football. That game against Juve in week 5 should be a cracker too.

Europa League Gp B, Matchday 2 - 1/10/09 (20.00 UK)
Valencia 3-2 Genoa
Floccari 42 (G), David Silva 52 (V), Zigic 57 (V), Kharja pen 64 (G), Villa pen 82 (V)
Mestalla
Unlucky Genoa fell 3-2 at the Mestalla after a dramatic encounter that saw David Villa turn it around for Valencia.
The Grifone won their opener comfortably 2-0 against Slavia Prague and were hoping to cause an upset in Spain. It was a special game for Emiliano Moretti, who spent the last five seasons as a Valencia player, while Alberto Zapater was back in his home country. The experienced Hernan Crespo and Rodrigo Palacio were rested in favour of Sergio Floccari and Raffaele Palladino.
Valencia got off to an aggressive start as Mata drilled wide one-on-one with Marco Amelia, then the goalkeeper dived on to Silva's feet to muzzle another good chance.
Silva flashed an angled drive inches past the far post, but Genoa started to emerge from their shells with Navarro needing a last-gasp interception to deny Floccari.
On 26 minutes Floccari nodded a Giandomenico Mesto cross over the goalkeeper, but Dealbert was there with a decisive goalline clearance.
Genoa took a surprise lead just before half-time with former Atalanta striker Floccari. Once again, he sprung the Valencia offside trap and this time kept his cool to beat Cesar Sanchez in the one-on-one, acrobatically chipping it over the Spaniard.
Valencia understandably came out fighting for the second half and laid siege to the Grifone area. They equalised when Banega's slide-rule pass allowed David Silva to sprint past Sokratis Papastathopoulos and beat Amelia.
Dealbert forced Amelia into a tricky save and soon after the Spaniards turned the game around completely. Once again Banega was involved as his cross-field pass released Mata to cross for Zigic in the centre.
Pablo Hernandez saw his shot deflected wide, but Genoa fought back to make it 2-2 in a thrilling Mestalla encounter. Papastathopoulos made up for his earlier error when he charged into the box and was barged over by Mathieu. Houssine Kharja did not miss from the penalty spot.
Valencia brought out the big guns with David Villa replacing Zigic, but it was Genoa substitute Giuseppe Sculli who brought a diving save out of Cesar Sanchez.
Despite all the drama, Moretti was the first player to be booked 71 minutes into the match for bringing down his former teammate Silva. Joaquin also came off the bench, but Genoa pushed for victory with Mesto just unable to get on the end of Palladino's through ball.
The sheer quality of Valencia's squad proved decisive, though, as Joaquin threaded through for David Villa and Esposito brought him down for a penalty. Villa sent Amelia the wrong way to make it 3-2.
Villa nearly put the result beyond doubt with a wonderful solo effort, but Mata also had to be alert to stop Palladino's cross reaching Zapater at the back post.
Valencia: Cesar Sanchez; Miguel, Navarro, Dealbert, Mathieu; Pablo Hernandez (Joaquin 78), Banega, Albelda (Maduro 78), Mata; Silva; Zigic (Villa 65)
Genoa threw away a 2-0 lead against Lille, but in stoppages Raffaele Palladino snatched victory.
The Rossoblu were thumped 3-0 in France, their second consecutive Europa League defeat, and were eager to get back into the running. Marco Amelia was still sidelined along with Bosko Jankovic, Houssine Kharja, Domenico Criscito and Ivan Juric, so goalkeeper Alessio Scarpi received his Euro debut this season.
Raffaele Palladino's first touch let him down on a Salvatore Bocchetti assist in the driving rain and a deflected Obraniak effort was smothered by Scarpi.
Genoa took the lead after 14 minutes when Palacio gathered from Zapater just inside the box and steered it past Michael Landreau with the outside of his right boot.
Landreau rushed off his line to close down another Palacio attempt, then the Argentine turned provider with his cross for a Crespo header that whistled wide.
Former Milan youth team striker Aubameyang drilled over, as did Palacio, while Obraniak curled a free kick marginally off target.
Rami just did enough to prevent Palacio tapping in Modesto's cross from the left and from that corner Palladino flashed a shot wide. Just before the break Crespo's daisy-cutter shaved a coat of paint off the far post.
In the second half a sweeping team move saw Modesto put the final ball in for Crespo, but the former Inter striker drilled off target.
Crespo made up for the error moments later by doubling Genoa's lead. The ball ping-ponged around the six-yard box from a corner and Crespo hit the post before eventually bundling it over the line.
Lille were still in it, though, as Toure' nodded wide with Scarpi rooted to the spot.
Palladino's searching pass found Palacio for a volley that flashed all the way across the face of goal to skim the woodwork. Palacio went close again, this time forcing Landreau to beat away his shot set up again by Palladino.
Lille got back into the game with 14 minutes to go, as substitute Pierre Alain Frau made an immediate impact. Scarpi palmed away a Cabaye effort and from the resulting corner the goalkeeper failed to keep out a Frau free header.
The French outfit were fired up and pinned Genoa back into their own half for the final stages. The goal was coming and Lille equalised with unmarked substitute Gervinho catching the defence unawares and turning in after a deflection off Tomovic.
Genoa were stunned, but poured forward for a late siege and it paid off! At the 92nd minute Palladino threaded through for Giuseppe Sculli's unstoppable angled drive. Genoa: Scarpi; Bocchetti, Biavam Moretti; Tomovic, Rossi, Zapater, Modesto (Papastathopoulos 79); Palladino, Crespo (Sculli 81), Palacio (Figueroa 84)
Genoa dominated the Derby della Lanterna 3-0 in an incredibly ill-tempered game with three red cards.
These local rivals were just four points apart going into a packed Marassi and had won just two of their previous five Serie A games. It was a spectacular start before kick-off, as the two ends staged displays and launched fireworks in the stadium.
Andrea Poli was able to play in midfield with the aid of a protective mask just days after fracturing his nose. Giandomenico Mesto was suspended for Genoa, joining the injured Bosko Jankovic and Houssine Kharja.
Antonio Cassano got an early taste of the derby atmosphere when Marco Rossi hacked him down after seven minutes.
Genoa had a far more aggressive start and the referee pointed to the spot moments later. Rodrigo Palacio burst into the box and was tripped by Reto Ziegler. Samp claimed there was a handling offence in the build-up, but replays suggest the ball hit Giuseppe Sculli's chest. Omar Milanetto stepped up and put the 'home' side in front by sending Luca Castellazzi the wrong way with a daisy-cutter.
A cross flashed inches over Sculli's head in the centre, then Sampdoria nearly scored an own goal! Sculli got away on the counter down the left and crossed low for Palacio, but Ziegler got there first and his clumsy clearance actually thumped the inside of his own upright!
Meanwhile Cassano was losing his temper after a series of niggling fouls and no yellow cards yet. Giuseppe Biava eventually went into the book after 27 minutes, more for Genoa's repeated tactical fouls than that particular challenge. Tempers flared on the half-hour mark as Sculli and Cassano had to be separated during a scuffle, which somehow left the Genoa man with a cut to the nose.
Genoa went very close to a second again, as Milanetto whipped in the free kick for Domenico Criscito's header and Castellazzi fingertipped it on to the crossbar!
Sculli sprung the offside trap and ran into the box, but flashed the angled drive across the face of goal with an unmarked Palladino waiting in the middle.
Genoa well and truly shot themselves in the foot on the stroke of half-time. Sampdoria took a free kick quickly and Biava intercepted it with his arm when trying to stop Cassano. It was a second bookable offence and left them with 10 men. Palacio also picked up a knock and made way for defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
In first half stoppages Castellazzi left a wayward Sculli cross, but it was a lot closer than he had bargained for and clipped the bar.
10-man Genoa nearly made it 2-0 right after the restart. Cassano was dispossessed and a counter-attack sparked with Papastathopoulos rolling across to Palladino. Daniele Gastaldello came sliding in to intervene, but in fact forced Castellazzi into a desperate reaction save.
Soon after, Genoa doubled their lead. A very intelligent cross-field pass found Marco Rossi unmarked in the box, as he controlled and nutmegged the goalkeeper from eight yards.
Incredibly it was almost 3-0! Rossi was again involved, threading through for Milanetto to spring the offside trap and the lob brought a fantastic fingertip save out of Castellazzi.
Samp threw on three substitutes in a desperate bid to turn this around, as Fernando Tissone, Salvatore Accardi and Nicola Pozzi stepped off the bench. However, the Blucerchiati were also reduced to 10 men for a late Rossi tackle, his second bookable offence.
Genoa were still very dangerous on the counter and earned their second penalty of the match. Rossi threaded through for Papastathopoulos and for the second time Ziegler went in very late. The scorer was Palladino this time round, squeezing it under the goalkeeper's arm.
Palladino's celebrations infuriated the Sampdoria players, who felt he was mocking the Blucerchiati fans behind the goal, sparking a furious scuffle that took almost a minute to calm down. Angelo Palombo was booked for his part in the row.
Another argument broke out by the touchline, then a Samp fan somehow got hold of a fire hose and tried to soak the Genoa supporters, but couldn't control it and mainly ended up soaking himself. The tension was sky high and play halted temporarily when a firework was thrown on to the field.
Remarkably, Cassano was probably the calmest player on the pitch and earned applause from the Genoa fans when he put the ball out of play for a Papastathopoulos injury. Sculli still insulted him from the bench, earning a reproach and apology to the Samp star from Coach Gian Piero Gasperini.
The tension got to Cacciatore, who was flashed a straight red card for an extremely late challenge on Ivan Juric. He had lost the ball and went sliding in dangerously. The referee wisely did not award stoppages.
Poor form by Palla at the end there, I thought Palombo was going to kill him!

Genoa have signed experienced defender Dario Dainelli from Fiorentina for €3m.

Report: Genoa sign Rafinha
There are reports that Genoa have already tied up a deal to sign Schalke's highly rated full-back Rafinha this summer.
The 24-year-old Brazilian attracted a lot of interest in the January transfer window, most notably from Juventus and Real Madrid.
At one point it looked as if Schalke would put Rafinha on the market after he returned late for winter training, one of several recent disciplinary problems.
He famously went behind Schalke's back to play for Brazil at the 2008 Olympic Games.
However, earlier this month Rafinha expressed his intention to see out the rest of his contract with the German giants, which ends in 2011.
That said, pianetagenoa1893.net understands the Rossoblu have beaten competition to his signature, although an official announcement has yet to be made.
It wouldn't be the first time Genoa have caused a sensation in the transfer market.
In 2008 they managed to land Diego Milito and Thiago Motta despite the odds being set against them.
Both players were sold at a handsome profit to Inter last summer.

Good signing if it comes off, he would really suit their style. Genoa is probably a better team for him than Juve or Milan, that might be too big a leap for him right now.

Genoa land Lewandowski?
Genoa have reportedly secured a deal to sign Lech Poznan talent Robert Lewandowski for next season.
Although the story is not yet official, there are strong reports in the Italian media that the Polish 21-year-old is heading for Serie A.
Striker Lewandowski had also been linked with the likes of Napoli and Borussia Dortmund.
According to newspaper La Repubblica, the forward will join Genoa in the summer.
He is a replacement for David Suazo, whose loan spell from Inter is set to expire in June.
Lewandowski has already won the Liga, Polish Cup, Polish Super Cup and is a full international.
Genoa continue to look at developing young talent.

JuveJay
Jun 4 2010, 08:49 AM
They don't have to, but you might see some players leave. They are involved in a lot of important co-ownerships and loans:
Palladino (Juventus) Criscito (Juventus) Bonucci (Bari) Ranocchia (Bari) L
Preziosi seems to want Criscito and Palladino permanently, in exchange for Bonucci. Ranocchia has had a serious injury but is also hot property, I think he wants to keep him for next seaosn unless a massive offer comes in. Their other players should stay, the better ones like Acquafresca, Zapater, Bocchetti and Kharja seem to be about this level.

Toni set to be paraded
Luca Toni will officially be unveiled as a Genoa player on Thursday, according to reports in Italy.
The veteran was expected to finalise his transfer to Marassi at some point next week, but all remaining details have now been ironed out.
Stories emanating from Genoa this evening are suggesting that the Italian will be presented to the media after the club’s new shirts for 2010-11 have been paraded tomorrow afternoon.
Toni, born in May 1977, has joined the Serie A outfit on a free transfer after he terminated his contract at Bayern Munich.
The 2006 World Cup winner began his career at Modena in the youth sector before moves to Empoli, Fiorenzuola, Lodigiani, Treviso, Vicenza and Brescia.
However, he exploded on to the Italian scene after his 50 goals in 80 appearances for Palermo, before a switch to Fiorentina.
The winner of 47 Azzurri caps, with 16 goals, Toni spent the last six months of his Bayern career on loan at Roma.

Official: Genoa Take Hoffenheim Starlet Franco Zuculini On Loan
Italian outfit Genoa have confirmed that they've reached an agreement with Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim over the transfer of young midfielder Franco Zuculini. The Argentinian midfielder will undergo a medical later today and sign a one-year loan deal upon completion.
Genoa coach Gian Piero Gasperini is looking to add some fresh blood to his squad in the summer transfer window in order to fight for a European place again in the 2010-11 campaign. Gasperini has now gotten his desired reinforcement in midfield with the capture of Zuculini.
The 19-year-old holding midfielder joined Hoffenheim from Racing Club in the summer of 2009, but he failed to make an impact with the Sinsheim side. Therefore, Zuculini was eager to move on in order to gain regular first team football elsewhere.
Zuculini initially appeared to be on his way to Napoli, but the Partenopei were unable to reach an agreement with Hoffenheim. Genoa then made a better offer for the youngster to hijack the Naples side's deal.

Supposed to be a big young talent, I would have thought a buyout fee would be high though.

Veloso can't wait for Genoa
Miguel Veloso insists he can't wait to play for Genoa after completing a medical that practically finalises his move from Sporting Lisbon.
The Portugal international is Genoa's fifth signing of the summer, taking the club's spending up to almost €30m.
Speaking to Telenord, Veloso said: “I can't wait to start this adventure and to speak with Gasperini.
“I already know that Genoa are strong. I have seen them on television and I know that the team has big ambitions.
“Gasperini is a great Coach and I am at his service.”
Genoa beat competition from Fiorentina to sign Veloso.
It's thought Alberto Zapater will move to Lisbon in exchange.
-----------------------
Just last week he said he wanted to join a bigger club Great signing for Genoa though, potentially. The fee is €6.5m plus Alberto Zapater, who is worth about €5m himself.
