Genoa sign Rafinha

Genoa President Enrico Preziosi has announced the signing of Brazilian full-back Schalke from German side Schalke.

The 24-year-old becomes Genoa's seventh signing of the summer after Luca Toni, Eduardo, Andrea Ranocchia, Chico, Franco Zuculini and Miguel Veloso.

Rafinha's arrival will be made official in the next few hours, as he is currently completing a medical at Genoa's training camp.

Meanwhile, Preziosi has admitted that Robert Acquafresca's move to Cagliari is 'almost done'.

He also hasn't denied reports linking Giuseppe Sculli with Italian champions Inter.

“There is a possibility, but nothing concrete at the moment,” he concluded.

---------------------------

Price is €8m.

He's great going forward, perfect for a lop-sided team like Genoa icon_mrgreen.gif I assume they'll still play 3-4-3 with Rafinha on the right of the 'midfield' and Criscito on the left, although they could move to a 4-4-2 with the players they have now.
Miguel
Huge signings for them. Eduardo is a top top keeper, and Veloso was excellent last season, it's a move he should have made a couple of years ago though Sporting are now crippled with Moutinho already gone, and Yannick set to go also

Genoa is a big club traditionally, it looks like they are heading back there, although I do wonder how far Gasperini's ultra attacking tactics can get them in a league like Serie A. Last year they went 57-61 which was about the same as an awful Juve, Ranocchia and Eduardo will help them massively (Ranocchia is seen as the next massive defender for Italy, Bonucci slightly behind), but their tactics make defending hard work.

As usual, what promises to be an interesting Serie A, hopefully it delivers a bit more this year. Certainly the standard is improving at most teams, maybe a bit stagnant at Roma and Milan though, plus Inter will struggle to repeat last year even if they stumbled through Serie A at times.

Genoa: 'We'll get Boateng too'

Genoa President Enrico Preziosi announces “we’ll sign Kevin Prince Boateng, but loan him out to another team.” The candidates are Milan and Lazio.

The Rossoblu are the most active side on the transfer market this summer, having picked up Eduardo, Luca Toni, Franco Zuculini, Miguel Veloso and Rafinha.

“I will get ahead of myself here and say we’ll sign Boateng, but loan him out to another team,” the patron told Radio Kiss Kiss.

The Ghanaian talent was a revelation at the World Cup and eager to take a step up from current club Portsmouth.

He had also been linked with Lazio, who could end up with the player anyway on loan from Genoa.

Another option for Boateng is Milan, who’d give him Champions League football.

“We signed so many players because we had so many gaps in specific positions,” continued President Preziosi.

“Up until now the other clubs have been working slowly on the transfer market because of the economic crisis.

“We hope to be in the top half of the table this season, but it’ll be tough, as Serie A is more balanced than ever.”

Genoa’s spending spree suggests someone has to move on and there are reports of Italy international Salvatore Bocchetti heading to the San Paolo.

“No player is untouchable, but I don’t know if Napoli are still interested in the player.”

--------------------------

Sounds crazy to pay £6m-£7m for Boateng then loan him out, he'd suit Genoa's 4-3-3.
JuveJay
Lazio are offering more money for Boateng, Portsmouth want to sell to them, but he wants to join Genoa.

Genoa have confirmed that Milan are interested in Salvatore Bocchetti, who despite being an Italian international they might sell as they are quite covered at the back.

Lastly, Genoa seem quite close to signing Emiliano Insua from Liverpool, after his move to Fiorentina fell through after they wouldn't meet his wage demands.
JuveJay
Salvatore Bocchetti is close to joining Rubin Kazan for about €9.5m. That's a lot of money for him, he's pretty good but has stagnated recently, decent move from Genoa in my opinion.

poor match though agreed.

Miracle if this dont end scoreless sleep.gif

Mesto with a bicycle kick goal lol

Genoa takes it at the 81st minute.

I abandoned the second half as the first was torturing me to no limit.

I thought Genoa would look flashy but really nothing at all but i guess its normal, first match of the season, engine not fully running and new signings need time.

Good result though.

Didn't see it but sounds like a typical Serie A opening game, unless there is an early goal they go quiet.

Report: Genoa sign Hallenius

Genoa have added yet more talent to their ranks in Hammarby striker Linus Hallenius, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The 21-year-old is something of a YouTube sensation after scoring an incredible goal against Syrianska in the Swedish Second Division.

La Gazzetta understands Hallenius will arrive in Genoa today for a medical and then sign a contract with the Rossoblu.

Genoa have apparently beaten competition for his signing from no less than Ajax and Bayern Munich.

Enrico Preziosi has already spent €41m this summer and his side went some way to repaying him on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Udinese.

I can't say I watch the Swedish second division, but here is the goal they are talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJi2lU9gXAU

Official: Genoa sack Gasperini

Genoa President Enrico Preziosi has sacked Gian Piero Gasperini after four years at the helm and brought in Davide Ballardini as his replacement.

It was no secret that Preziosi had grown tired of watching his team underachieve, especially after spending over £30m in the summer.

Genoa have lost three of their last four games in Serie A and slipped down to 14th last night following a 1-0 defeat away to Palermo.

This morning's La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed Davide Ballardini was the favourite for the post and it appears they were correct.

Ballardini was last in charge of Lazio before Claudio Lotito dismissed him in February with the club perilously close to the relegation zone.

------------

No real surprise, maybe they can get a coach now who knows how to defend as well as attack.
fantasista
...and replaced with Davide Ballardini, whose tenure at Lazio was an absolute and total disaster. Not sure I see the logic in this move.
JuveJay
Preziosi thinks he is the right man, so what do we know? laugh.gif
JuveJay
Another disaster for Eduardo, he has been awful this season.

It looks like Genoa wants Marchetti to replace him, although WBA also fancy him too.

I'd go to Genoa, let's be serious.
JuveJay

"We want the city...leave Genova Samp!!"

LOL, harsh. They'll miss their two big games per season really.

Genoa fans with a massive banner in their curva that just says 'B', leaving it up even while the match is going on laugh.gif 2-0 right now, Floro Flores with both, which goes to show that even our 5th choice strikers are better than other team's first. icon_mrgreen.gif

Genoa sold Mimmo Criscito to Zenit for €11m, so he links up with Spalletti. I hope he likes the cold icon_mrgreen.gif

What is with Genoa? On paper there's absolutely no way they should be a bottom 5 team, and yet they'll finish this round in 16th place unless they can find a goal from somewhere.

And as I say that Julio Cesar takes down Palacio and gets sent off... laugh.gif But nonetheless, they're huge underachievers.
JuveJay
Preziosi doesn't use them in the right way, he's just turning players over to make money, he actively encourages his players to be sold as soon as possible.

True, not at all unlike Cellino at Cagliari. laugh.gif It also doesn't help that all the Portuguese players they signed last season have been total flops.

Genoa are losing 3-0 at home to Siena at halftime. huh.gif It seems crazy, but they could realistically go down this year and join their friends Sampdoria in B, especially with the way Lecce have been playing recently. If Lecce beat Lazio today, however unlikely that might sound, Genoa would finish the week in 18th.

Chaos as Genoa-Siena halted

Genoa's 4-1 defeat to Siena was suspended for 40 minutes when angry ultras demanded the players take off their shirts, as they were “unworthy” of wearing them.

Genoa were losing 4-0 at the 53rd minute when the Marassi crowd halted play by throwing fireworks and climbing on top of the tunnel.

Captain Marco Rossi went to negotiate with the ultras, who demanded the squad remove their jerseys, as they were “unworthy” of wearing the Genoa colours.

After some time, the players accepted and there were tears from Giandomenico Mesto as he handed over his shirt.

Rossi was walking around the pitch with a pile of jerseys to show the fans, but Giuseppe Sculli refused to co-operate.

Sculli went over to speak to the fans himself and insisted with great passion that he was giving his all for Genoa, so would not take off the shirt.

He too was in tears and comforted by the head ultra. This proved a breakthrough and the game was allowed to resume.

---------------------

WTF! Mental stuff.
TGLucario475
Why take off the shirts? When they've still got the shorts and socks? Unless Genoa fans aren't as homosexual as they want everyone to think, as they wanted to see their players run around topless.

honestly kudos to the Ultras, it's extreme but f**k me 4-0 down to Siena at home blink.gif

It was a shameful result but the ultras can't be allowed to hold the club captive. rolleyes.gif I didn't see Sampdoria fans doing things like that last year when they were losing to weak teams. Protest is fine but you can't stop the match. Giancarlo Abete said that the FIGC will ban all involved from entering Serie A stadiums, but I wonder if they'll actually enforce it.

Should do, it's not a big problem. Juve have already given a dozen ultras lifetime bans for monkey chanting this season.

Genoa match halted as ultras demand players hand over their shirts, which they did

By Brooks Peck

A small group of Genoa "ultras" put on an incredible display of fan power during Sunday's match against Siena. After Siena took a 4-0 lead over relegation-threatened Genoa early in the second half, the hardcore supporters group began their protest and essentially held the match hostage.

From Football Italia:

Genoa were losing 4-0 at the 53rd minute when the Marassi crowd halted play by throwing fireworks and climbing on top of the tunnel.

Captain Marco Rossi went to negotiate with the ultras, who demanded the squad remove their jerseys, as they were "unworthy" of wearing the Genoa colours.

After some time, the players accepted and there were tears from Giandomenico Mesto as he handed over his shirt.

Rossi was walking around the pitch with a pile of jerseys to show the fans, but Giuseppe Sculli refused to co-operate.

Sculli then went over to the ultras standing atop the tunnel and delivered an impassioned plea, making it clear that he didn't want to hand over his shirt because he was giving his all. Goalkeeper Sebastien Frey also refused to take off his shirt and argued with fans behind his goal. As the riot police continued to loiter, Sculli's speech and the supporters' protest then ended with Sculli in tears and being consoled by one of the ultras.

The match then resumed after a 45-minute delay and finished without further incident as Genoa lost 4-1 (their one goal was a Siena own goal).

After the match, Italian football chiefs expressed their unease over fans exhibiting so much control. From the AP:

''This violence is unacceptable,'' Italian soccer federation President Giancarlo Abete said. ''These are not fans. I hope these people are found and condemned. They shouldn't ever be allowed to enter stadiums again.''

Genoa president Enrico Preziosi said ''it's upsetting that 60 or 100 people have the impunity to do and say what they feel like without being stopped and sent home.''
''It's not possible that they take over the stadium and impose their laws,'' he said.
Well, it appears that it is, Mr. Preziosi.

UPDATE: Football Italia and Sky Sports Italia now reporting that Genoa sacked manager Alberto Malesani after the match. This is the second time Malesani has been sacked by Genoa this season.

That's surreal.

Genoa have banned the two main ultras involved for 5 years each.

QUOTE
A spokesman for the Genoa fans who disrupted play for over 40 minutes yesterday has defended their actions and asserted that no violence took place.

The match between the Grifone and Siena was temporarily halted less than 10 minutes into the second half yesterday afternoon due to the actions of a group of Rossoblu supporters angry at the 0-4 score-line.

“Everybody talks about violence, but violence is another thing,” expressed the ultras’ representative Fabrizio Fileni on Studio Sport on Monday.

“At the stadium yesterday nothing happened, there is nothing to repent for.

“Indeed, we had decided to resume the game. It was a mixture of anger and worry because we risk relegation.”

Fileni was asked what violence was, if not the throwing of flares on to the pitch yesterday, the blocking of the players’ tunnel and the reported threats to invade the playing area.

“Violence is that which is seen in the Rome derby, where you have people being stabbed. Instead, we have asked our fans not to commit acts of violence.

“We’re used to seeing ugly incidents outside stadiums, but this time nothing happened. Women and children fled the stadium? This is not true, we have been attentive to this situation.”

His interviewers asked for comment on the fans’ demands to captain Marco Rossi that he and his teammates handed over their shirts, as they had deemed the footballers ‘unworthy’ of wearing them.

“Up to 3-0 we cheered as usual. There was no premeditation [to humiliate the players], but then what prevailed was a mixture of anger and concern.

“It was more concern in truth, because we risk relegation and that was a turning point.

“We did not force the players to remove their shirts. We asked. Because they had dishonoured them.”
Shows their mentality, they think they own the stadium and the game of football and that the game is played exclusively for their benefit and nothing and no-one else matters. This guy's stupidity is pretty mind-boggling, they're very lucky to not be facing a points deduction which would all but guarantee relegation. They've been in Serie B many times before, what makes this group of players so particularly unworthy to wear the shirt?
JuveJay
I suppose the threat of violence is ok lol.
fantasista
So Genoa lost 3-2 at Bologna in the retarded lunchtime fixture, if Lecce earn a point against Parma then Genoa will finish the week in 18th.
