Ferrara ready for Juve challenge

Ciro Ferrrara has been presented as the new boss at Juventus after the dismissal of Claudio Ranieri. “Judge me on what I do.”

Ferrara was brought in to replace Ranieri after Juve's 2-2 draw allowed Fiorentina to move just one point behind the Old Lady.

Ranieri is the first Juventus Coach to be sacked in 40 years since Argentine Luis Carniglia.

“We want to thank Ranieri, but after the recent results and with Fiorentina just a point behind we have opted to put Ferrara in charge,” Jean-Claude Blanc said at Ferrara's unveiling.

“Ciro said that he was available yesterday and this morning we decided to give him the job. We will see what happens after the two remaining games of the season.

“We wanted to shake up the players and now it is up to them to show us a reaction.”

Ferrara, who played 500 Serie A games - 253 with Juventus - has been in charge of the Bianconeri's youth team since 2006 and has worked with the Italian national side under Marcello Lippi.

“The important thing is to get the players showing pride again - not much needs to be done to turn things around,” Ferrara said.

“It only takes a few small things to get into or out of a crisis. I don't think the physical side is the problem.

“It's right to look to the past, but we must remember that Juve have had to change over the last three years. However, we know that the Bianconeri need to play in the Champions League without having to play preliminaries.

“I spoke to the directors yesterday and I hope to be useful. Given my recent history in this shirt I have no doubt I can succeed.

“I have made no requests and I am completely ready to help the club as I have been since 1994. It's obvious that this is an enormously emotional moment.

“I want to be judged on what I do and my own abilities. I am not scared of putting myself out there, but it's clear that I need time to do things on a tactical and technical level.

“As for the national side, rest assured I will be available to Lippi from June 2. For now I am in charge of Juve for 15 days and then we will see.”

Proud to be Leeds
Was the youth team successful under him?
JuveJay
Yes it is, they are doing very well. He doesn't coach a specific team, he oversees the whole programme. Each age group has its own specific coach.

So he has no managerial experience?

So he's only your coach until the end of the season ?

Took a fortnight to reach that decision, a bit immature from Juve i think.

Italy doesn't have managers, he is a coach but hasn't coached a full side. He is an assistant for the Italy U21's.

Ferrara awaits Juve decision

Ciro Ferrara acknowledges he would love to extend his spell on the Juventus bench, but it no longer depends on him.

“It has been a positive spell. I made that joke that I wanted to get seven points to show the players how important these two games were,” he said after beating Lazio 2-0.

“I must thank them for all the hard work they put in, those who played and those who didn't. Second place was very important for us and we achieved it.

“Respect is the crucial element of a relationship between a Coach and players. I thank the players, many of whom were my teammates, for giving me this chance. It makes everything easier to be in my position with that help.”

Some say Ferrara will progress from caretaker manager to permanent Coach, but other options are Antonio Conte and Bordeaux's Laurent Blanc.

“I don't know. Until a few days ago it seemed as if only Conte and I were going for this job. I hear Antonio is going to renew with Bari, in which case I'm perfectly happy to let the alternatives take themselves out of the running!

“When I sat on the bench I wasn't kidding myself, but at the same time I have a hope. Now I just wait to hear the club's decision, which hopefully will be next week.”

The Bianconeri have been criticised for not pushing Inter harder in the Scudetto race, but have already signed Diego for next season.

“Right now there is a difference, as Inter certainly deserved to win the Scudetto and have more belief in their abilities than anyone else.

“Having said that, Juve have improved from third place to second. It won't be easy, but we will give it our best.”

This match might've been Ferrara's last on the Juventus bench, but it was definitely the final step in Pavel Nedved's journey with the club.

“I was moved to salute a great champion like Nedved and it's a shame when you see him run and shoot the same way he did today.

“We must respect the choices of the individual and he received a wonderful ovation from the Stadio Olimpico.”

Ferrara wins Ferguson praise

Sir Alex Ferguson was very impressed by new Juventus boss Ciro Ferrara. “He will do very, very well.”

The two met for the UEFA Elite Coaches Forum in Nyon this week and the Manchester United manager was immediately won over.

“He is not a surprise for me, as I met Ciro many times as an opponent, so I can guarantee he is tough. He will do very, very well,” the Scot told Tuttosport.

“First of all, a champion like him knows how to handle players. Secondly, he is leading a big club like Juve that he already knows very well.

“There are no secrets, he can spot even the smallest details. In this meeting he listened a great deal and the few times he did speak, he proved that he has some definite ideas. I like him and predict a very successful future.”

The Bianconeri have strengthened over the summer with Diego, Felipe Melo, Fabio Cannavaro and Fabio Grosso.

“Juventus have always been one of the big clubs in Europe. Along with prestige and charisma, they have important players,” added Ferguson.

Manchester United knocked Inter our of the Champions League last season, but Jose Mourinho’s men are targeting the Final.

“They could get there, they are very, very strong. They’re one of the teams who could go far, like Juve and Milan.

“The competition is won and lost in the knockout rounds. The secret is to be ready at that moment.”

Ferguson is always complimentary when it comes to Juve but it's nice to see Ferrara is well thought of, we can see that he has a lot of potential as a coach.

Training has been suspended for tomorrow huh.gif Either Ciro is in trouble, or the players are going to take a hammering.

The board confirmed him yet again, so Rocky is still standing, he really can take a brutal beating.

It's getting beyond a joke now. How long did Milan's bad run go on for? A month? Month and a bit? Erm, we are 2 months in with a shaky one before that.

good for him,I hate when coaches don't get fair chance to prove

What is a fair chance? I think he has had more than a fair chance! Juve are out of the title race in January!

Thuram: Juve should trust Ferrara

Former Juventus defender Lilian Thuram believes the Bianconeri should have more faith in Ciro Ferrara.

Juventus have been in crisis ever since they were knocked out of the Champions League in December.

The Turin giants lost to Chievo on Sunday and were pushed out of the top four in Serie A.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Thuram said: “It's typical of Italy to take it up with the Coach when the team loses some games.

“I don't think it's the right way to face the situation.

“In my opinion Ferrara is a very capable person. He played with Juventus for a long time and they need to give him faith. Let him work.”

The 38-year-old World Cup winner then lent his support to Juventus President Jean-Claude Blanc.

“I have no doubt about the quality of Blanc who has done very well up until now. What I don't like about your country is that, in case of problems, you always focus on those who have little to do directly with the condition of the team.”

What does Cirocky mean.
JuveJay
Just a nickname he got when he compared himself to Rocky.

QUOTE
"One of my friends, one of the few I have at the moment, said to me, 'you are like Rocky'. I am full of punches and blood but I say to my opponent, I am not hurt, punch harder because you are not hurting me," Ferrara told a news conference. "There is nothing that could knock me down, my mother punched harder."

Juve have announced yet another press conference for later today.

If they confirm Ferrara again I will go crazy.

An hour ago it looked like Ferrara was gone, now the press are talking about keeping him for Thursdays game or longer...

What is the rationalization behind keeping Ferrara so long?
JuveJay
The only thing that could keep him in a job is the fact Juve can't get a decent replacement, but Blanc has really messed this up and his job is also on the line.

Obviously Hiddink is the preferred choice, but he wants crazy money. Benitez has been mentioned again just now, but it seems really unlikely. I would prefer an experienced caretaker until the summer and then get Lippi back, or move for Prandelli.

JuveJay
We need someone in before that game against Inter, the Coppa is all we have left. A silver star would be scant consolation this season but it would be better than nothing.
JuveJay
The opinion is that basically he has already been sacked but because Juve can't get another coach in yet he will take the Inter game and maybe even the Lazio game rolleyes.gif
JuveJay
Apparently a few of the Juve players and staff got into little skirmishes in the dressing room. My money is on Cirocky!
JuveJay
Blanc went on Sky and said that they would act tomorrow as the first objective of the season was over. Erm, wtf?

What a coward, French prat, it was common knowledge this would probably be Ciro's last game anyway, in fact some say he has been effectively sacked for weeks.
JuveJay
Looks like he is gone today then.

GDS reckon it will be Gentile until the summer, or otherwise it will be Zaccheroni. Great.
viking
gentile want to stay in turin in a long time.
he said if rafa benitez come in june, he wants to be his assistant.
JuveJay
That would be an ideal move, given the options.

Zaccheronic ffs

I remember how he managed to reverse Inter fortunes in Europe, they looked great under Cuper, his formations were a joke, lol
Avon
maybe when Guardiola leaves us in 2011, you'll be lucky enough to get him
JuveJay
Gentile is a 4-4-2 guy as well, so what he is going to do with Diego I don't know, unless the horrible and unsuccessful 4-4-1-1 returns. When Iaquinta, Trez and Amauri are all fit it has to be two strikers.

The thing is he would face many more problems here, not least our board. He knows the Barcelona system and all the players know what they need to do, I'm not sure it would translate very well to calcio.

Yes, Guardiola loves his 4-3-3, and he already knew some of his players very well from his time coaching the "B" team. Pep may try England, but not Italy I think.
