Club career

Melo began his career in Flamengo, Cruzeiro and Grêmio in his native Brazil. Melo moved to Spain, joining Real Mallorca at the end of the 2004–05 season. Afterwards, he joined Racing Santander, where he spent two seasons, before moving on to Almería. After a successful first season at Almería, Melo agreed to transfer to Italian side Fiorentina in a €13 million transfer for the 2008–09 season. This was confirmed after Almería's match against Recreativo in La Liga. He made his debut in the first leg of the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League against Slavia Prague, and scored his first goal in a viola shirt against Atalanta in the Serie A.

On 30 June 2009 he signed a new 5-year contract with Fiorentina. Within days, however, Melo was the subject of a bid from Juventus F.C.. The two clubs eventually agreed a fee of around €25 million with Juventus' Marco Marchionni joining Fiorentina on 15 July 2009.

On 22nd July 2011 Melo was loaned to Turkish side Galatasaray for a fee of €1.5m. Gala can purchase the player outright at the end of the 2011-12 season for an additional €13m.

International career

Melo made his debut for Brazil on 10 February 2009 against Italy in a friendly match, which Brazil won 2–0. He scored his first goal in the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification over Peru. Brazil won 3–0. At the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, Melo scored the opening goal in a 3–0 victory over United States. Melo started all five games at the competition as Brazil went on to win the trophy.

This was our biggest singing of the summer if you ask me. He is a player who we needed very badly and he will help bring our club back to the top. Im very excited to see what kind of partnership he will form with Sissoko.

Diego is still the most exciting for me but I love midfielders like Felipe who can do it all, this guy is like Diego where he is on the brink of establishing himself as world class so I hope he continues to grow. He really needs to watch his temper though, we have a very card happy midfield with him, Momo, Marchisio, Camo and also Diego who plays with his heart on his sleeve, need to be cool because this team will get kicked more this year with more possession.

Melo: Juve can win everything

Felipe Melo introduced himself to the Juventus fans by pledging to “win everything there is to win at one of the most important clubs in the world.”

The Brazilian completed his £21.5m move from Fiorentina this month and some considered him a traitor for joining their arch-rivals.

“I did what I had to in Florence and if they sold me for that sum, then I must’ve done something right,” said the midfielder.

“I am sorry about the Fiorentina fans who reacted badly, but now I hope to confirm my status in one of the most important clubs in the world.”

Melo impressed at the Confederations Cup and hopes to be a part of the 2010 World Cup squad, following in the footsteps of Carlos Dunga and Emerson.

“For now I must focus on my club, as the higher I take Juventus, the more likely it is I’ll be called by the Selecao.

“I’m a long way off Dunga and Emerson now, but I have just arrived in a top club and when I have won some silverware then I can mention them in the same breath.

“We have to be like a big family at Juve and I am here to be a part of it. I have played against Diego many times and it will be fun to be his teammate for once,” he said of his fellow Brazilian.

The Scudetto is the primary target, especially if Inter sell Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Barcelona in exchange for Samuel Eto’o.

“Inter are very strong, with or without Ibrahimovic, even if I consider him to be stronger than Eto’o. We must focus only on ourselves and prove it through our work.

“I came to Juve because here I can win everything there is to win.”

-----------------------------

I was impressed with his interview, rather than rolling out the clichés he seemed very focused but relaxed, I think he has the right temparement for a Juventus player.

He looks like you wouldn't mess with him! Melo and Sissoko is going to be one scary midfield!
JuveJay
Indeed, several fans have commented on this. Add in Marchisio and it's not a midfield I would want to play against, ask Ronaldinho about Marchisio icon_mrgreen.gif
Ricky
I am still very disillusioned about this Melo player. When I had him on Pro Evo 2009 I am pretty sure he was a winger, not a DM.
JuveJay
He has always played as a central midfielder Ricky, what they call a regista in Italy, a guy who sits in front of the defence and passes the ball and breaks up play, but he can also do a bit more than that. I think he scored a few goals for Almeria when he played there in a central position getting behind the forwards. Our defence was hammered by the lack of one last season, I would be surprised if they are as exposed with this guy in front of them.
JuveJay
I have been really impressed with him and how he has fit into our team through pre-season. His passing range is even better than I thought and he is so strong when he goes shoulder to shoulder with someone he always comes out on top, he dictates the play well and I just look forward to seeing him alongside Sissoko as it will be a very intimidating partnership.

The only thing Melo doesn't have is great pace off the mark because of his physical stature, he is a bit like Emerson was in his prime where his acceleration was not great but when he got going he was a bit like a steam train and he likes to give and go with the ball. However he was really tired after about an hour of the Villa game as he has had no holiday so I hope he gets a rest against Villarreal.

If he can stay fit and on the pitch I am sure he can be one of the players of the season next year.
JuveJay
A lot of people noticed Felipe's wild celebrations after Diego's second goal, and also when he scored his own. Apparently he was playing with his heart on his sleeve as his grandmother who he was very close to had just died before the game and his father is ill also.

Watch his celebration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRwDwjncdiw

laugh.gif Fair play to him though.

In this months Football Italia magazine, thought I would post it, I'm nice like that.

Felipe Melo arrived in Italy in 2008 as something of an unknown quantity. But having attracted the attention of Fiorentina's famed talent-spotter Pantaleo Corvino, the tough-tackling midfielder quickly became a revelation in Serie A. Now, just a year later, he meets us at the Principe di Piemonte Hotel in Turin, as a Juventus player and a fully fledged Brazilian international.
Sporting a red shirt, a cap and shorts, the South American is relaxed but also tired. He still hasn't had a proper holiday, what with the Confederations Cup and everything else. Furthermore, he took part in almost all of his new club's summer friendlies and then had World Cup qualifier commitments to contend with too.
Nevertheless, the powerhouse is ready to begin his most important adventure to date. And at 26 years of age, he is ready. Indeed, he has arrived at the right place at the right time. We introduce you to Felipe Melo, the man Arsenal wanted in the summer but now the man who runs the Old Lady's midfield.

Is Juventus a point of departure or arrival?
It's evidently a point of departure. I'm starting a new life and I've got everything to gain. It's exciting.

Are you ready?
Yes, but I must get over this fatigue. I haven't had a break since the end of last season. I went to play in the World Cup qualifiers and when I was on holiday I didn't relax at all because I was always on the phone trying to find out about my future. The Confederations Cup followed and then my arrival in Turin. Luckily I was suspended for the first game of the season, so Coach Ciro Ferrara gave me three days off to escape with my family.

When you began playing football did you imagine a day such as this, being a first choice for Juventus and the Brazilian national team?
I dreamt it, but did I imagine it? No! Nevertheless, the teams most followed in Brazil were Milan, Juventus, Liverpool and Manchester United, so I already had some interest and a liking for the Bianconeri.

Did you have an idol when you were playing?
Yes, Zico. I also got to know him personally.

What was your first team?
It doesn't exist any more, it was the team of my home town, Volta Redonda, near Rio de Janeiro. I've stayed in touch with my first Coach, Nelson Aguilar, though.

Is it true that you started out as a striker?
Yes, to make a comparison I was a forward a bit like Diego Milito. Playing as a striker happened a bit by chance. I was in the youth team at Flamengo and I played in the Zico Cup, scoring 10 goals in 13 matches. I finished as top scorer.

You then made your debut for the Flamengo first team where, like your Serie A bow for Juventus, you celebrated with a goal.
In fact, it was a decisive goal in a decisive game. Had we lost we would have been relegated to Serie B and for a club like Flamengo, that situation would have been unbearable. The tension was high, very high. I remember some fans entering the hotel and the climate was heavy. I didn't think I would play, but I came on. With the score at 0-0, a cross from Petkovic, a dummy from Juan and my header - a goal and victory.

Usually in Brazil, as soon as a player shows some talent, a row of scouts, real or alleged, present themselves in front of his house.
It happened to me too! One arrived and told me that Girondins de Bordeaux wanted me. But nothing happened.

You then went to Cruzeiro, a big team with Gomes in goal, then Maicon, Alex, Luisao, Deivid and Wanderlei Luxemburgo on the bench.
Luxemburgo was the best Coach I had in Brazil, a born winner, one that worked like crazy, explaining everything and then backed up by staff of immense worth. For these reasons he wins wherever he goes.

Was Douglas Maicon as good back then as he is now for Inter?
He was the reserve to Maurinho, a player who went on to the national side, but then he had injury problems.

From Cruzeiro you moved on to Gremio.
Of that period in my life, I only save the meeting with my future wife. I met her there, at Porto Alegre.

Then you arrived in Europe, at Real Mallorca. Why did you go there?
Benfica and Porto wanted me, or so they more or less said, but only Mallorca really believed in me. It was still a fantastic move, I remember when we played against Real Madrid, there was everyone - Zinedine Zidane, David Beckham, Roberto Carlos. I scored against them in a 2-1 win. How satisfying that was!

You were there for a year and then you signed for Racing Santander...
They were two difficult seasons at Racing. They made me play as a left back and as a striker; they said that I was not cut out to be a central midfielder. But I didn't agree. I realised I was to become a player of strength, of quality.

You left Racing and moved to Almeria...
To think that I had considered the move a step backwards! Almeria had just been promoted to the First Division, but then I realised that I had made the right choice. It was a fantastic year with Unai Emery as Coach and Alvaro Negredo up front.

When did Fiorentina contact you?
I signed with them five months before the end of the season. I didn't want to take any risks in case they changed their minds so I didn't think twice about it.

What mark would you give yourself for your season in the Viola shirt?
Eight out of 10.

Do you remember your debut?
It was against Slavia Prague in the preliminaries of the Champions League. After four minutes Adrian Mutu scored from a free-kick.

What was your best experience with Fiorentina?
Our return from Lecce with fourth place and Champions League qualification confirmed. The place was full of supporters.

And the worst?
Obviously that would be my suspension after the incident against Cagliari.

Everyone speaks highly of Viola boss Cesare Prandelli...
He's too intelligent, really! I've never seen a Coach like him. He instantly understands exactly what he needs to do, the necessities of the team. He's truly incredible.

During your time at Fiorentina you were called up to the national side. How did you find out? Did Carlos Dunga call you?
No, I was at home with my family in Florence. We went on the Brazilian Football Federation's website, where we saw my name and we started to shout like mad!

How was your first day with the national side?
I already knew some of the players before I arrived, so that helped. As a tradition, the new arrival must give a speech and others have a laugh. It's a sort of baptism. I was so happy.

What do you think of the rule that obliges a footballer to present himself to the national side?
It's a mistake. If one comes unwilling they might as well stay at home.

What are your best qualities?
Physical strength, coming out with the ball at my feet and heading.

Where should you improve?
I need to play the ball more quickly, to play with fewer touches.

Who are the best players in your role?
Michael Essien of Chelsea and Barcelona's Yaya Toure.

What's Ciro Ferrara like?
He's like Prandelli, he always looks you in the eyes when he speaks to you.

What do you imagine your new adventure will be like?
I am 26 years old, I am ready to win. If I'm not ready at this age, I will never be! I have arrived at a huge club that hasn't won for a long time.

Before a match you raise your hands to the sky and pray. Could you tell us what you pray for?
I pray for my teammates, that they play well, and I also pray for my opponents, so that no-one on the pitch gets hurt, that no-one gets injured during the match.

Is the story true about you doing martial arts? Is is true that you are an expert in Jiu-Jitsu?
Yes, yes, it's true. I can do martial arts, although I don't practise it now. I often did it when I was a young boy. I was very tense, very full of energy. I worked it out through the exercise. With the help of martial arts I learned to control myself and, above all, to unload my tension by doing Jiu-Jitsu.

Where have you left your three dogs?
In a kennel in Florence. But as soon as I have sorted myself out at my new house I'll go down there and pick them up - I can't wait!

When you're at home do you watch matches on the TV? La Liga, the Premiership, the Bundesliga?
I watch everything, literally everything. I am fortunate to have such an extraordinary wife - she knows it's for my job. However, twice a week we go out together, just me and her.

We haven't asked you yet if you believe Juventus will win the Scudetto, because Inter seem too strong at the moment...
At Juve, I have met people who are foaming at the mouth to win. After three years without titles, they are ready to do everything they can to bring home a trophy. Indeed, we want two trophies, because we truly believe we can win the Champions League as well as the Italian title.
JuveJay
He is a very intense person, but believes in himself totally and he is a leader, it's important we have players like this. He is also absolutely correct about his weaknesses, as seen against Bologna.
Oni
Sounds like a good guy.

Melo faces spell on the sidelines

Juventus midfielder Felipe Melo looks set to be out for a while after suffering an injury against Maccabi Haifa last night.

The Brazil international came off worse following a heavy challenge from Tiago Dutra, which ended his evening after just 58 minutes.

Melo limped off clutching his left calf, which is bad news for Juventus, as he has only just recovered from an injury suffered in that area.

The 26-year-old was in tears on the bench and didn’t even join his team-mates when they celebrated a hard fought 1-0 victory.

Speaking after the game, Juventus Coach Ciro Ferrara said: “Melo is very upset with his injury, he suffered an ugly blow.”

SFortunately Juventus have plenty of cover in Melo’s position and if he is unable to be fit in time for Sunday’s match against Siena then Ferrara will either change the system or move Momo Sissoko and Christian Poulsen around.

-------------------

Just as it looked like we had found a system to suit us with the prolonged absence of Del Piero, bang bang, Melo and Zebina out and we go again at trying to plug the gaps, it is just a continual cycle of injuries.
JuveJay
Had his best game for a short while last night.

Three words: WHAT. THE. FUCK.

He should be ashamed of how he is playing, an embarassment to himself and the shirt.
JuveJay
He has turned the corner again, some very impressive recent performances, often MOM.

It helps that he is playing in a competent tactical system now and the team is winning, it gets him frustrated less and he can play with less errors.

"We were interested in Melo during the summer," said Wenger. "We watched him in Brazil's international at the Emirates, against Italy [in February 2009], when he had an outstanding game. Then he went to Juventus and that team has struggled and certainly he has not had the season that everyone predicted he would. We still think he is a very talented player and with Gilberto Silva, Brazil have a very useful pair in midfield. We are still looking at Melo."

LOL, we just paid £22m for him Wenger, your move...

Back to being a fucktard again, played like shit and then started swearing at the fans and waving his arms around like a lunatic because they were booing him.

I'm not sure we can do with such a loose cannon in our team anymore, perhaps the best thing would be for him to have a good World Cup and then sell him to a club that puts up with morons, because that is basically what he is. He isn't all there.

Melo critical of Juve
Wednesday 12 May, 2010
Felipe Melo has rejected claims that he doesn't deserve to be in the Brazil side by saying that Juventus lost five out of six games without him this season.

The 26-year-old midfielder who cost Juventus €25m last summer was voted Flop of the Year in January.

Speaking to ESPN Brazil, Melo was asked if he thought his first season in Turin had been a disappointment.

“I do not agree. Juventus have lost five out of six games without me.

“I play at Juventus like I played at Fiorentina, but they paid €25m for me and for this reason the people expect me to score in every game.

“Last season I was better at stealing balls from my opponents. I participated in the Confederations Cup last summer and I am always playing.

“It's right to say that this season hasn't gone how we expected, but everyone at Juve didn't have the season they expected.

“If Juve had won six games more everyone would be speaking about the wonders of Felipe Melo,” he concluded.

he sounds like an arrogant twat.
JuveJay
He hasn't played as well as he did last year, and even if he did, that isn't enough for Juve like it was for Fiorentina. It hasn't all been his fault though, he has been in the wrong position at times and exposed, but he needs to know when to pass the ball and not. Sure, he is outspoken, but class when he gets it right and fancies it. He was excellent against Parma.

Melo revels in fans' affection

Juventus midfielder Felipe Melo is delighted that the club's fans have finally warmed to him after a difficult first year in Turin.

The Brazil international has finally started to come good under Gigi Del Neri after being a major flop last season.

“Yesterday we got our first win in the League, but the fans also supported me after the defeat in Bari and after our last two draws.

“I am really happy with their affection. It means a lot because I didn't receive such applause and respect from my fans.

“In Italy a lot has been said in the newspapers about my relationship with the fans.

“It's a shame that I then read in some Brazilian papers that I had been whistled and obviously that made me sad.

“The Coach has given the squad an injection of confidence and important reinforcements arrived this summer.

“Despite our place in the table it's still not where we'd like it to be.

“There has been a significant change in mentality and I think that this season we could express ourselves better than in the last one,” he concluded.

-----------------------

You can't dispute his desire and ability, but he really has to find consistency, against Sampdoria he had another two mistakes (one was unlucky) and was average against Poznan, also giving a penalty away, but very good against Udinese. You always worry he is about to do something stupid, he has a screw loose.
Mr. Heavyfoot
I forgot that Juve gave away Marchionni to get Melo. Wow.

'Melo has changed'

Christian Brighi, the referee from last night’s match between Juventus and Cagliari, wrote a message on a yellow card telling Felipe Melo that he has changed.

Last season Melo was considered a flop and often ended up in the referee’s book, much to the frustration of his teammates.

The Italian media referred to Melo as Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde, something Brighi would allude to in his message.

Speaking on Brazilian TV, Melo said: “After the game, the referee donated one of his yellow cards to me where he had also written a dedication: ‘To Felipe’s good brother’.

“I know that I have important qualities and no one has ever said that I am bad with my feet. I am an optimist.

“Juve are on the right track and will get back to being great,” he concluded.

http://www.football-italia.net/sep27a.html

----------------------

He's been better this season so far, but more importantly, he hasn't been a lunatic. Delneri described him as a 'leader' and gives him a key role, he suits the 4-4-2 and this could be a big year for him if he keep his head straight.

Such is Melo icon_mrgreen.gif His head does seem to be straight under Delneri, you can't say it is forever but he hasn't had a brainfart for 4 games and has not been booked much. Also, it became clear last season and this that he suits a 4 man midfield.
JuveJay

Felipe Melo has today given an interview with La Gazzetta on Juventus, Brazil and why his son is called Lineker.

The combative midfielder has started the season brightly in Turin after a nightmare campaign last term, which ended in Bianconeri failure and World Cup shame.

“We have to be optimistic about the season ahead,” Melo noted. “We are Juventus, the biggest club in the world, and one destined to win. You only make mistakes in one year here, not any more.

“Boss Gigi Del Neri and director Beppe Marotta took me to one side at the start of the season and said: ‘Felipe, you’ve very important for us.’

“The rest God did and I wanted to turn the page over, even if a bad season is never the fault of just one player.”

After struggling with Juve following his €24m move from Fiorentina, Melo was then painted as a villain in Brazil’s World Cup campaign following dismissal against Holland.

“Don’t confuse character with malice. Nevertheless, it is up to you. I’ve heard worse – after the World Cup I was referred to as disloyal and unfair,” he added.

“But go and have a look at my career, I have never hurt anyone. I’m tough, spirited, but fair.

“Brazil-Holland? It’s sad as we missed out on a great opportunity seeing as we could have been 3-0 up just in the first half.

“I only feel some sort of responsibility up to a certain point because we were already down when I was sent off, and we sort of already knew that we wouldn’t get back in the game.”

Melo hasn’t played for Brazil since given that new boss Mano Menezes has looked at other midfield options so far.

“If he bosses Brazil then it means he must deserve it, but I know what I am worth,” continued the South American.

“I’m a great player, the most expensive Brazilian signed by Juventus, one of the most prestigious clubs in the world.

“I am just focusing on doing my best on the field of play, to give my all, and following my dream of returning to the national side.

“If I play well then the Coach will have to consider me as he is obliged to keep a check on all players.

“I also know that he will be spending some time in Europe to watch a few games. That’s good, I’ll invite him to watch us, perhaps Milan-Juventus…”

The pink paper also questioned the Brazilian on stories that he named one of his three kids Lineker in honour of England legend Gary.

"Absolutely not. I read this, but it's not true,” he insisted. “It's an idea stolen from my father who wanted to call my brother Lineker.

“I was a little boy at the time, but I said to him: ‘Papa, find another name, because I would like to give this to my first son.’ I already had clear ideas back then,"
he laughed.
