Roma boss Claudio Ranieri believes that Francesco Totti's awaited return on the international stage is possible.

The Italian hitman retired from international football at the age of 30 in July 2007, and cited his deteriorated fitness as a reason for his decision.

But with Italy in dire need of a competent marksman ahead of the 2010 World Cup, Totti is understood to be contemplating an international return to give the Azzurri more firepower.

Although the Roma star is now 33 years old, Ranieri is convinced that he can regain his place in Marcello Lippi's team.

"I think that Totti's road back to La Nazionale is workable," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Francesco had renounced the blue shirt because of his physical problems. But now it seems to me that he has the desire to return.

"If he takes a step back, offers his availability and, contemporaneously, Lippi also takes a step back and is willing to accept him, then the door can open again."

i actually want to see him in la squadra, he has so much to offer and i think it would be a massive and a very important addition for the WC

Not again, Totti's time with La Nazionale is finished, he can barely stay fit for Roma. If Lippi wants to call a fantastista there is one in Genoa who would be better.

i think it might be true this time, i dont think Totti can bare the idea of not being in the WC if he actually has smth to offer and if his fitness doesnt deteriorate then why not

Totti considers Italy return
Monday 30 November, 2009
Francesco Totti is considering a sensational return to the Italian national team after the team's veterans pleaded him to go back.

The Roma star said he will wait until April 2010 and then decide in accordance with Marcello Lippi whether he is going to join the Azzurri mission to South Africa.

“Everybody is talking about this but in the end Lippi and I will make the decision,” revealed Totti.

“I like the fact that Lippi talks well about me, we always had a great relationship on and off the pitch.

“The veterans asked me to return. March or April will be the decisive month to see how I feel.”

Totti also spoke about his new contract and the situation with his own club.

“We signed the papers and are just waiting for Roma to deposit it. I expected us to be struggling but this team is worth Inter, Milan and Juve - we deserve to stay up there.

And regarding next week's derby: “Lazio are favourites because they are playing bad football and are struggling even more than us,” he laughed.

“Mauro Zarate is a good player, but not a great one,” he concluded.

Agreed... I seriously, seriously doubt that Lippi will call up Cassano though, he seems stubbornly dead-set against it. If he doesn't call up Cassano then one of Totti or Giovinco has to go IMO or we'll be left with no creativity up front.

Im against Totti going, but its not like he's worse than all the faggots up front. His presence will do good for the team, not wonders, but good.

Totti: 'I'd go to the World Cup!'
Saturday 2 January, 2010
Francesco Totti has finally confirmed he will go to the World Cup “if Marcello Lippi calls, I’m fit and the squad wants me.”

The Roma captain has not worn the Azzurri jersey since the 2006 World Cup Final in Berlin, at first taking a year’s Sabbatical to work through his injury worries, then opting to retire from international duty.

In recent months he has been in stunning form for the Giallorossi and the return to the helm of Lippi has fuelled speculation over a shock comeback in South Africa.

“I will make the decision in April,” Totti told La Repubblica this weekend.

“If Lippi calls, I’m fit and the squad wants me, then I will go to the World Cup. I think the young players would be pleased to have me there.

“My rapport with Lippi goes beyond football. I will never forget what he did for me in Germany.

“He didn’t know me personally, I had always been his ‘enemy’ on the field when he was at Juventus, but he waited for me and had faith. I really can never forget that.”

Totti was also asked if he had any regrets about his time in the Italy squad and went back to the incident in Euro 2004.

“My remorse is that I spat at [Danish international Christian] Poulsen. We never sat down and explained it to each other.”

Totti claimed he had been repeatedly provoked during that 0-0 draw and was suspended when he was caught on camera spitting at the back of Poulsen’s head.
