This has been baffling me a while now, can anyone explain the history behind this crest?
Is it 2 babies suckling on a dog?
I put it in the Roma forum but perhaps it would be better moved elsewhere so we could discuss the history or meanings behind all club crests. huh.gif
JuveJay
It's Romulus and Remus, surely you have heard of them?
JuveJay
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romulus_and_Remus

Basically the mythological founders of Rome (the name comes from them). The story is that were nursed by a wolf after they had been left to die as babies.
JuveJay
It also appears on the Siena emblem:

Siena was founded by Senius, son of Remus.

Anymore crests?
JuveJay
I made this one for the Sampdoria crest a while back:

Most Italian sides have the city logo on their crests:

>

St. George's flag, who is their patron saint.

>

Torino comes from the latin Taurinorum, meaning 'town of the bull'.

As examples.
BlueIron
Interesting, I always thought the Sampdoria one looked like a cartoon dog smokin a pipe! icon_mrgreen.gif

Here's one that doesn't:

Atalanta

Atalanta is a Greek goddess. They are the nicknamed La Dea (The Goddess).

Why are they named after a greek goddess being Italian?
JuveJay
Who knows, just a name that was chosen at the time by founders. Like Juventus, which is latin for 'youth', just names that they choose at the time for one reason or another. To give a certain image.

For the Roma crest, they could have made the wolf look like a wolf, instead of a Rhino. The Siena one is much better.
JuveJay
They use the famous Capitoline Wolf statue: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitoline_Wolf Which is the definitive depiction.
Fabregas#4
Yeah, but that looks like a wolf. With the colouring on the Roma crest I just see a Rhino looking straight ahead instead of a Wolf turning towards me.

Must be due to the influence of Greeks on Italy in ancient times, a few Italian villages still speak Greek today.

no bias, Romas crest is the best looking crest out of these mentioned in the thread. icon_mrgreen.gif

Another griffin. Many clubs use a lion or an eagle but some with a classical leaning go for the griffin, which gives them the best of both worlds. Then the clubs that have opted for either a lion or an eagle look on jealously and wonder why they weren't told about fabulous beasts of myth and legend. Of course, griffins aren't taught in schools anymore as they don't fall under Literacy, Numeracy, Science or Good Citizenship. Perugia's griffin, however, is not the type of creature you might describe as Fabulous. It looks more like the type of griffin who has tried to get into an off-licence at 3am by slamming their shoulder repeatedly into the glass door and bawling imprecations at the proprietor for closing so early. He will then try to ponce a cigarette off the arresting officer. Perhaps the population of Perugia are not concerned with over-protective health strictures about binge drinking and benders – it may well be the stag-and-hen party capital of Europe – in which case their crest is a welcome antidote to all those smug, teetotal robins, lions, knights and dragons.

Coat of arms again I'm afraid icon_mrgreen.gif
Milanello
The red and white flag on the milan emblem i always thought was the flag of St Ambrose, the patront saint of Milan, although the english founders of the club and st georges flag were just a happy coincidence to coinside, hence also why Inter had the Red and white cross kit the other season.
JuveJay
Sure, Ambrosiani etc. I was just trying to avoid terminology clashes because English see it as the St. George's flag.

Greg, other than the beautiful (mostly) cars the Alfa Romeo badge sits on, what interests me is that it carries the emblems of both the major football clubs of the city of Milano, where of course Alfa Romeo was founded.

I'm a little more more familiar with some of the the history of the serpente emblem, it being popular with a certain section of the Inter support, the "dragoni!"

Juve Jay, having mentioned Ambrosiana, I imagine you know successive fascisti governments forced that name on Inter around 1930 and it stuck until they were removed from power at the end of WW2...

You explain the Roma crest well.

As for the Sampdoria logo, yes, at first glance it looks like an olden days sailor smoking a pipe but when you look a little more closely you have the impression of the back view of another old time seafarer carrying his sea chest or wooden trunk. At the top of the image you can imagine his hat and the wide part would be his long cloak or coat. On the left you can see what looks like a box or trunk...the little pipe bowl and stem shape to the far left might be something attached to his trunk.

I remember a debate about this logo on Sky Sports in season 90-91 when they presented Italian football in the UK, even before Ch4, Ch5, British Eurosport and Bravo. Now there's some really useless info for you! lol.gif

I see I should have hit "submit modified post" rather than "reply!" That would have saved me doing three edits! I'll get used to this particular control panel...each forum seems to have its own variations, even when using v-bulletin software such as this one does.

Interesting thread...

A couple more:

Genoa CFC was originally formed by Englishmen, but the St. George's Cross was also first used by Genovese ships in the year 1096 AD.

Udinese's badge is simply the coat of arms of the city of Udine.
Carlo Romano
I have two more also! If the Bologna coat of arms...

and the team badge are debatably related...

I don't think the same can be said of the Bari coat of arms...

and the team badge!

The AS Bari logo is one of my favourites as I'm a big clipart fan!

JuveJay
Yes, I Galletti. This is the club mascot and has been since 1929 when it was chosen by a vote.
Milanello
so where does the Brescia lion come from?

icon_mrgreen.gif how original, i guess i could have found that out with a little more googling

I wouldn't go that far, but you have to be a real bad ass to go out on the pitch with the image of a wolf breastfeeding too boys on your tit. Most of Roma are a bad asses.

Well, the old Roma badge was just a wolf:

But yeah, until relatively recently I thought it was 2 robots and a dog... lol

roflmao.gif wtf lol

we actually still use the "older badge" if you want on our third kit :

Carlo Romano
Speaking of bad asses, you would not consider mouthing off even in fun at Palermo's pink shirts in that city...

not if you wanted to walk away physically intact!

Luca Toni was a god there. That will pale by comparison to what he'll be with la nostra magica Roma if we win big!
