Newly appointed Alberto Zaccheroni must lead Juventus to a top-four finish. Serafino Ingardia believes he will deliver as long as…
Following the axing of Ciro Ferrara and the appointment of Alberto Zaccheroni, many were left wondering whether the Coach from Cesenatico was the right man for this caretaker job.
Given that the length of his contract doesn’t imply a long-term future at the club, Zaccheroni will have only one main target to achieve – qualification for the Champions League.
I happen to know Zaccheroni personally as I interviewed him exclusively for Calcio Italia magazine back in November 2008. Zac gave me a positive impression, down to earth and hard working – a guy with plenty of calcio ideas though clearly past his best.
It is undeniable that after coaching Udinese, Milan, Inter, Lazio and Torino there was little left in his career. And he had done pretty well to be fair. Now this opportunity which came from nowhere gives him yet another chance to leave a mark on the footballing landscape.
Zaccheroni will no doubt have plenty to tell his men, but will his experience and ideas be enough to help the Old Lady’s cause?
There are many problems at the club which need dealing with. First of all the injury issue – 48 injuries over the past six months definitely needs some kind of investigation. Then there is a strictly tactical problem as he will have to understand what strategy suits his players the most. Ultimately, the controversy in the dressing room which undermined the spell of Ferrara.
There is a Brazilian clan at Juventus which must start collaborating. Felipe Melo, Diego and Amauri have grown apart from the team. Then there are the veterans who want to have a say in the manager’s decisions. On top of that the ‘anarchic’ Mauro Camoranesi standing on his own and youngsters lost in between.
Zac will have to make the most of his past experiences to tackle these issues. Juventus have a squad which can be comfortably compared to Milan and Inter. So if they are not on the same level the matter cannot be addressed to luck but to mental problems which Zaccheroni has to solve.
If he does that I can see them easily making the top three. Roma, Napoli and all the others are simply not as good as Juve in the long run. But the Bianconeri need to get back on track sooner rather than later.
So will Zaccheroni be able to deliver? I would definitely put my money on him.

The two main issues are simply injuries and finding a suitable tactical system.
