about time truth comes out

QUOTE
ROME (AFP) - Italy's World Cup winning defender Marco Materazzi said Thursday he had made a mistake in sledging French icon Zinedine Zidane during last year's final.

Materazzi told Zidane that he preferred his "whore of a sister" to his shirt.

It was this comment that led to Zidane headbutting the Inter Milan defender in the chest and being dramatically sent off. That incident preceded France losing the final in a penalty shoot-out.
"Six stupid words. I made a mistake but Zidane also made a mistake in reacting the way he did," said the uncompromising Materazzi, who scored in the final and one of the penalties in the shoot-out.

Materazzi was talking at the launch of his book "Life of a warrior", co-written with two Italian journalists, and released just before the Italians face France in Milan in a Euro 2008 qualifier on September 8.

The French won the first match 3-1, but Materazzi will miss the re-match after picking up a thigh injury in a friendly win over Hungary earlier this month.

"I understand why he reacted that way," added Materazzi. "It all happened in a match of high pressure. But I don't understand what came after when he was forgiven by everyone except me who had been headbutted.

"If we made peace, no-one would know about it, we would do it in private perhaps at my house or his. That's why I didn't want to say anything publically. I left the talking to others but only him and me know what happened."

Materazzi, who has undergone surgery on his injured thigh, believes he could be back in action in October.

Although he will miss the match with France in Milan, he appealed to fans to act peacefully in the return leg.

"I want spectators to greet the French team in the same way that we were welcomed by French fans in Paris. They were very fair. I ask the tifosi to do the same."

Materazzi also has his own thoughts on the one-match suspension handed out to France coach Raymond Domenech for that game.

"It's 19 years to the day that my mother died," he said. "Some things are more important."

I think he has gone a bit further than a mistake icon_mrgreen.gif

Matrix is a hero, period. I dont care what he told to Zidane, it was up to Zidane to not fall into his trap.
Cigol
He's not a hero, but it's not his fault Zidane headbutted him. Probably just more attempts at getting his name in the press and getting his book in the spotlight and trying to cast a different light on the situation to generate interest. No doubt.... pfft.

Well he was talking at the launch of his book.......

He is a hero, cause he contributed more than anyone else in the world cup victory by scoring a goal, having Zidane sent off and scoring on the pk, no other player on the field that night did more than him
Cigol
I'm not denying YOU the right to call him a hero but you said it in a matter of fact way that transcends supporters of the Italian football team. Anyway Italy were lucky to win the final. Had Barthez not been in goal (and thus stood a chance of saving at least one penalty) then it would have been a different story Zidane or not wink.gif

Yes but the coverage of it would have been far more limited in the worlds press...

Two words - Malouda. Dive.
Cigol
There was enough contact from super-hero Materazzi to send Malouda crashing from the momentum. France were the superior, more deserving, side throughout the game. History is cruel like that snack.gif

Cruel indeed. Terrible shame.

having ball possession doesnt mean shit, Buffon was force to make only one tough save and it was Zidane's header, other than that, Buffon really had nothing to worry about...mind you France's pk was a dubbious one, he fell like he was shot. It serves them right to lose like that considering in Euro 2000 we were the more deserving side to win until the weird 5 minutes injury time came along, we call it Karma

hero to idiots like you,he is also a terrible footballer .
JuveJay
He's not actually, he is technically good and is a danger from both freekicks and penalties.

and commits unnecessary dangerous fouls, when he is challenged
JuveJay
True, that's makes him a dirty player though, not a bad one.

he is ok,he never will be the class of a classic Italian defender.

I don't know, I think Hunter for example will disagree.
He is in the Gentile mold, not graceful like Baresi, Bergomi, Maldini or Scirea.

I never said he was italian, I said his style was the same as them.....defensively he is not in the same class as them, but he is not too far away, the man is a strong defender, you underestimate him. When Inter clinched the scudetto, who was the decisive scorer for the scudetto clincher??Materazzi (scored 2 goals on that game). He comes up bigger than most players I know in important games, thats why I would take Materazzi over alot of players today, he was greatly responsible for the world cup victory and played a huge role in Inter's scudetto, so to me that guy should get credit

He is a pure destroyer.

Inter defender Marco Materazzi has finally offered an olive branch to Zinedine Zidane and claims that he has no enemies in football.

The pugnacious stopper has enjoyed a highly successful career, but has built a reputation as one of calcio’s bad boys.

This image became indelible after the World Cup Final when comments aimed at Zidane led to the Frenchman headbutting the Matrix in a moment of madness that will never be forgotten.

While neither man has been willing to bury the hatchet and give an unabridged version of the events of the fateful night in Berlin, at last Materazzi has made a conciliatory gesture.

“I want to apologise to Zidane because for me he was a football god,” the ex-Perugia man told the Spanish Press. “But, saying that, I couldn’t have behaved any other way and neither could anyone else.”

Materazzi also insisted that there he had no ill feelings towards any fellow players or Coaches, even controversial French boss Raymond Domenech, who made few friends in the peninsula with recent accusations against Italian football.

“Domenech showed his intelligence when he said that I was the Man of the Match in the World Cup Final,” the 34-year-old grinned. “I knew at the time, but it took him a year to realise it.

“I don’t have any enemies or prejudices. I joke with Dejan Stankovic, calling him a gypsy, but we shared a room at pre-season training camp. It’s the same with Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Gennaro Gattuso, who is like a brother.”

By the way, his book Una vita da guerriero is doing very well.

No I haven't icon_mrgreen.gif Only little bits that have been put into the dailys, I might get it but it looks like a story of rags to riches with a lot of self proclamation in the middle.

Zidane isn't sorry for headbutt

French legend Zinedine Zidane says he would rather die than apologise to Marco Materazzi for headbutting him in the 2006 World Cup Final.

Zidane was sent off as France lost to Italy on penalties in the last match of his otherwise glorious career.

Speaking to El Pais, Zidane said: “Nothing changes, but I forgive everyone, not him though. Never, never… It would be a dishonour to myself. I would rather die.

“I don't blame myself for what happened, but if I say sorry it would be admitting that what Materazzi did was normal.

“He insulted me and he insulted my mother, who was ill, more than once and I didn't respond. But then, I did it.

“If he were a decent guy, a good lad like Kaka for instance then I would have apologised, but not this,” he concluded.

He's played a few games for Inter this season, but he is behind several players now, it will be his last season there surely.

Materazzi makes Zizou peace

Marco Materazzi has revealed that he has made peace with 2006 World Cup rival Zinedine Zidane.

Speaking in an interview with So Foot magazine, the Italian says the two have shaken hands after Zizou famously head-butted the defender during the Berlin Final five years ago.

Meeting by chance in Italy while Materazzi was visiting former Inter boss Jose Mourinho, the ex-Perugia stopper says he made the first move.

“I reached out and I said ‘listen, I'm sorry this happened, it's over.’ He said ‘no, no, no problem, do not worry.’ We shook hands and that was it.

“Man to man is what is most beautiful, because to make peace for the sake of FIFA and before Sepp Blatter is just advertising.

“But making peace in the car park of a hotel, it was like two friends or two enemies meeting and shaking hands.”

Despite clearing the air with the French icon, Materazzi added that he now wants to discuss the matter with FIFA.

“FIFA called me but did not allow my lawyer to discuss what happened with the committee,” he explained.

“They just need to keep the reputation of Zidane and make me look like the bad guy,” he continued.

“As Blatter speaks Italian I know we can exchange a few words quietly. Sooner or later it will happen”

Hopefully he headbutts Blatter.
