Final four complete with Dinamo

UEFA Futsal Cup holders MFK Dinamo Moskva have completed the lineup for the 2007/08 final four after drawing with Elite round Group B hosts Luparense Calcio A5 in Padova.

Lineup complete
Dinamo needed only a point tonight to ensure their place in the final four from 24 to 26 April alongside Russian compatriots MFK Viz-Sinara Ekaterinburg, 2006/07 hosts and bronze medallists ElPozo Murcia FS of Spain, plus Kazakhstan's Kairat Almaty. And Dinamo's 2-2 draw meant the Russian champions did just that. UEFA will now decide on the venue for the showpiece event, which begins with the semi-finals and ends two days later with matches for first and third places.

Benfica consolation
Italy's Luparense came second despite SL Benfica's 7-3 win against KMF Municipium Casino Pljevlja in the early game between two sides already eliminated. However, Montenegro's debutant representatives Municipium had enjoyed a fine run, as one of only two clubs to reach the 16-team third stage after starting in August's Preliminary round.

Werner bolsters holders' squad

José Venancio has named Juan Ignacio Werner in an otherwise familiar Spain squad for their defence of the UEFA European Futsal Championship from 16 to 25 November in Portugal.

Familiar faces
Werner only made his international bow this week, as Spain beat Romania 4-1 and 6-1 in friendlies, but the 29-year-old did enough to earn his place among the 14. Venancio will rely on the core of the group that claimed the continental crown in 2005 and successfully defended the FIFA Futsal World Cup the year before – including goalkeeper Luis Amado, Kike, Javi Rodríguez and Daniel, who missed the last finals with a knee injury.

Making the cut
Back-up goalie Cristian Domínguez returns after seven months, and Jordi Torras and Marcelo Dos Reis have overcome injuries to make the cut. Venancio, who only succeeded Javier Lozano in September after Lozano's departure to Real Madrid, will lead the side in a friendly against Kazakhstan on 9 November before opening their finals campaign against Ukraine eight days later. Serbia and Russia are Spain's other Group B opponents.

Spain squad
Goalkeepers: Luis Amado (Interviú), Juanjo (El Pozo Murcia), Cristian Domínguez (FC Barcelona).

Field players: Kike (El Pozo Murcia), Jordi Torras (Interviú), Javi Eseverri (MRA Navarra), Carlos Ortiz (MRA Navarra), Álvaro Aparicio (El Pozo Murcia), Andreu (Interviú), Javi Rodríguez (Móstoles), Daniel (Interviú), Juan Ignacio Werner (Azkar Lugo), Marcelo Dos Reis (Azkar Lugo).

Venancio relishes Spain challenge
Wednesday 14 November 2007

José Venancio was given quite a task a couple of months back. Javier Lozano had just resigned as Spain coach on the eve of the UEFA Futsal Championship, and Venancio stepped up to lead the holders in the defence of their title, succeeding a man who in 15 years made his nation the prime force in the world game.

Experience
Venancio did not lack in experience. The 43-year-old was, and remains, coach of top-flight club Autos Lobelle de Santiago FS, having previously been part of the Spain technical staff, led the Guatemala national side and masterminded Caja Segovia's domestic treble in 1998/99 and subsequent unofficial European title. But he knows that stepping into the shadow of his friend Lozano presents a special kind of challenge as he prepared to start their finals campaign in Porto on Saturday having won their last game 5-0 against a Castro Urdiales XI.

Responsibility
"I am the coach of the winners of the last two World Cups," Venancio told uefa.com. "Not only do I have responsibility for the national team, but also for representing Spanish futsal. We're talking about the best league in the world and we have to prove that at the European Championship. Everyone will be watching Spain closely and that's a lot of responsibility."

Lozano backing
His dual role means extra pressure, but Venancio is delighted to have the chance. "The truth is that they approached me once Lozano had left but I was under contract at Lobelle and that wasn't what they had in mind," he said. "However, I managed to sort it out with the club and the president. It wasn't something I was thinking about, things just happened that way and logically. Everyone wants to be involved with their national team and for me it's an honour, I'm very proud. I have to thank Javier Lozano because he entrusted me with this. I am his student and he is my teacher, I have learned a lot from him and I have been lucky in the sense that sometimes teachers make the students pull through."

Tough competition
Keeping faith with the team that Lozano built on the principle that "we should not change something that works", Vevancio has a tough group to negotiate, opening against Ukraine, then playing Serbia before a rematch of the 2005 final with Russia. And any semi-final would not be easy with 2003 champions Italy and hosts Portugal among the potential opponents. "We are going to try to win but we know that there are other countries in the running for the title," Venancio said. "We have to respect them all and count on them because this sport has grown so much in Europe and all national teams are of the highest level. Russia, Italy and Portugal are, in my opinion, favourites for the title as well as Spain."

Spain underline champions status
Saturday 17 November 2007

UEFA European Futsal Championship holders Spain got their defence off to a good start as they survived losing a two-goal lead to defeat Ukraine in Group B. Kike made the opener for Marcelo before adding another himself. Although Serhiy Cheporniuk struck either side of half-time to level, Álvaro, Jordi Torras, Daniel and Marcelo dashed Ukraine's hopes of avoiding a fifth defeat by Spain in four European final tournaments.

Spain on top
Within four minutes Kike had gone close three times as Spain began brightly but were not being allowed much room in the Ukraine half. Luis Amado was not forced to block a shot until the 15th minute from Sergiy Taranchuk but within seconds the reigning champions were ahead. Kike spotted Sukhomlinov off his line and tried a chip from distance which the goalkeeper parried only for Marcelo to send the rebound into the net.

Sukhomlinov had better luck in blocking a Torras effort, but Javi Rodríguez's corner was teed up perfectly for Kike to volley in. Cheporniuk pulled one back within 17 seconds and there was a blow for Spain at the end of the first half when Javi Eseverri was booked twice in quick succession.

Ukraine were not able to exploit their one-man surplus that lasted until 90 seconds after the break but Serhiy Sytin did force Amado into a save. Back to their full complement on the pitch, Spain moved forward and Kike's snap-shot was wide. However, Ukraine were level as Cheporniuk raced up the field after a Spain corner and gave Amado no chance.

Holders pull away
But a Spain counterattack immediately restored their lead, Ortiz setting up Álvaro. And with eight minutes left Kike made another goal, his cross turned in by Torras. Daniel's shot from distance then increased the lead, though Sukhomlinov did then produce a superb point-blank save from Marcelo, who shortly afterwards hit the post before finally claiming his second goal of the game late on.

I've been watching some of this. Italy are actually quite good, Spain and Portugal are good as expected. I love the format, especially with the GK's coming out as an extra man, it reminds me of ice hokcey when you pull the goalie.

Superb Spain retain futsal title
Sunday 25 November 2007

Spain retained their UEFA European Futsal Championship crown with a clinical performance to defeat Italy in the final in Gondomar.

Fourth title
Álvaro, in superb form, made the opener for Marcelo – who also scored in the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Cup final defeat of Italy – and the same player created another early in the second half for Daniel. Spain captain Javi Rodríguez added a third and although Italy goalkeeper Feller pulled one back, the 2003 champions could not deny their opponents a fourth European title in six tournaments.

Spain ahead
Marcelo was denied by Feller only to then become the second player to beat him in these finals as he headed in following a superb jinking Álvaro run and cross. Grana nearly responded for Italy, but Amado got the slightest of touches on his shot to turn the ball on to the post. Álvaro forced a save from Feller with a low drive, while Foglia's strike was pushed above the bar by Amado, who also denied Morgado and 2003 final matchwinner Bacaro just before the break as the Azzurri ended the half in attacking fashion.

Second goal
But then Spain began the second period by scoring. Álvaro was again the creator as his shot was parried by Feller, and Daniel put the ball in on the rebound to join finals joint-leading scorers Predrag Rajić and Cirilo on five goals. Italy now needed to push and Sandro Zanetti became the latest player frustrated by Amado who went on to block a Bertoni effort.

Captain strikes
Rodríguez at 33 had won two European finals in the past but until today had not scored in this showpiece. But that changed after a fine cross from Marcelo, converted with aplomb by a man who struck twice to win the 2000 FIFA Futsal World Cup final. Grana's shot was saved by Amado, but with ten minutes left the Spain keeper was beaten by his opposite number as the advanced Feller blasted in from distance.

Azzurri shut out
That gave Italy fresh impetus and Grana took over as a flying goalkeeper, even saving from Javi Eseverri. Zanetti, Assis and Foglia shot wide and Amado stopped a Grana effort with his boot, but Spain are an experienced and formidable unit at the back and the two-time world champions became the first side to successfully defend the European crown.

This has been a good, well organised tournament.

The Portuguese TV ratings were good, and now they have sponsorship for their league. Interest in the sport continues to grow, with a chance that futsal will be featured in the 2012 Olympics.

Bosnia-Herzegovina in Spain's path
Wednesday 5 March 2008

FIFA Futsal World Cup holders Spain must beat Bosnia-Herzegovina over two legs to reach this autumn's finals in Brazil after the 12-team play-off draw was made at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.

Hat-trick bid
Reigning European champions Spain won the last two World Cups in 2000 and 2004, and after travelling to Bosnia-Herzegovina in the week beginning 29 March will stage the second leg a fortnight later. Italy, runners up to Spain in the last World Cup as well as the 2007 UEFA European Futsal Championship, face Croatia while two-time global semi-finalists Russia, who missed out in 2004, are up against Belarus.

Expanded finals
Of the other sides that qualified last time around in Chinese Taipei, Ukraine face Hungary, Portugal meet Slovenia and the Czech Republic hope to gain revenge for their UEFA European Futsal Championship defeat by Romania. The total of six European berths is increased from the previous tally of five in the expanded 20-team competition, which runs from 30 September to 19 October, with the finals draw in Brasilia on 6 July.
